I test rode one of these on Saturday. The engine note altered noticeably depending on whether the clutch was in or out. Could someone tell me whether this is normal or not?

Many thanks

Yes this is OK, if by noticeable you mean only just noticeable.

My SV used to do this, and G's R6 does too.

Its just the clutch plates rattling in the clutch basket. Wise man say, if engine have problems it make noise that you won't have to strain to hear - IE LOUD.

Eitherway, thanks for the advice.

Mine makes that noise... had it checked out by a mechanic who told me it's fine and quite common.

The clutch rattles a lot on my hornet too. as for the gear chage i've found if i blit the throttle before moving from N to 1st it goes a little easer but i still need to be quite forcefull compared to the other gear changes, its a typical honda gearbox.

One thing I'll imagine you'll find that even with the clutch in (in gear), there will still be drive being transmitted through it; there is still pressure on the clutch plates. If it's on the centre stand, put it in 1st gear, pull the clutch in and you will see that the wheel will still rotate.

In neutral, the clutch isn't connected to the output shaft through the gearbox, (in or out) so the engine has less resistance to motion and will rev more quickly.

In gear, with the clutch out, the engine is working to move the bike so has a lot of resistance through the drivetrain :revs more slowly. With the clutch in, almost all of that resistance disappears so the engine will speed up.

My Hornet (1998) does the same. I found that it was down to me Embarassed . I was new to riding and found myself constantly covering the lever with my foot. After a while, my foot used to rest on the lever and throw it out of synch somehow Confused . Much better when I started putting the ball of my foot on the footpeg!

Sometimes, it can be awkward to drop into first from neutral. I just let the clutch out slightly and it drops in fine.

I dunno if this the aforementioned question but whenever my Dad puts his Hornet back into Neutral from first it makes a ghastly rumbling noise. Confused
