You should be able to see the neutral light with just the ignition on, but if you can't, you can find it by going all the way down into first, then clicking into neutral like normal. Roll the bike to see if it is in gear or not. It won't roll more than a few inches either way if it is in gear, whereas in neutral it'll roll wherever you push it.

you could just make sure its in neutral by siting on it and trying to push it forward..if its in gear it wont move forward much..

You sould be able to just turn the ignition on with out starting the bike and if theres a neutral light it will tell you.

I normally just leave it in neutral when i park the bike up.

Hope this helps

Dan

I always use the clutch when starting, even if its says its not in gear - Just incase..

Done it too many times on off-road bikes that it has now become one of those things i always do...

Same here, hang over from years of car driving where starting in gear can cause real problems. On a 2 stroke 125 though, with a decently healthy weight person sat on it it's not going anywhere if you start it in gear. Well, mine won't Very Happy 'Bout 2 inches.

Doesn't really work with 2 strokes. Not standing anyway. Plus it should really be down 5, half up Wink Very Happy

Yeah i agree with everyone else, count gears, then roll to check. P.S this might be just my gearbox but you might find you'll have to roll the bike back and forward to change gear while off!

If you have trouble putting it in neutral at a standstill, let the clutch out till it bites slightly and roll the bike back and forwards as you try and change gear.

Hold the clutch in when you start the engine.

The day you trust the neutral light is the day you drop your bike, whilst parked on a hill, in the middle of a bike meet, and create a dominoe effect.

A modern bike really shouldn't start in gear.

My XJ just flashes a red light at me when I'm doing something stupid, in gear, side stand etc.

But yes, as a rule, hold the clutch in. Not on my MZ though, if you hold the clutch in, the kick start does nothing and I wonder why there's no resistance.

Gazdaman is right, you shouldn't be able to start the NSR while it's in gear (I know cause I've tried it). Some bikes do (Yam SR125 for example) but the NSR shouldn't. Just remember to put it into neutral before you turn off the ignition.
