Been trying to figure this one out for days, but I can't find any useful info:

Is it ok to wire up two 12V sealed lead acid batteries of different capacities (amp hours) in parallel and both use and charge them as a single unit?

Thinking Eh?

Paul.

Not sure. I would have thought using batteries in paralell would work ok. They use a big line of batteries in coaches and buses.

Not sure about the capacities though?? I know when you charge batteries in series (like in a radio controlled car) they only go up to the level of the lowest capacity cell in the pack.

What are you trying to do?

in parallele yes , the charging amps will split in 2 separate intensity function of each capacity . ex : if you've got a 12 Ah and a 8 Ah with a total charge courant of 4 Amps , the 12 will charge at 2,6 A & the 8 at 1,6 A .

I want to replace my battery with something bigger and a little more deep cycle. I have just fitted a heated waistcoat and I am planning a halogen headlight so I want to make sure the bike has some reserve. Only problem is space under my seat is at a premium. Best thing I can think of is to split it between two batteries and squeeze them in where they will fit, but the holes are different sizes, hence the batteries need to be.
