All I've heard since yesterday from friends is stories about this friend coming off and that friend nearly coming off!!!! Shocked

I'm not an experienced rider, but many people on here are and can surely share some tips for the less experienced amongst us!

It's the first weekend of good weather and there's been shitloads of accidents and near misses so far!

Just take care out there folks!

I've only been riding a year-and-a-half myself, so not what I'd call an experienced rider. FWIW, here's my tip:

"Warm up" to dry-weather riding again exactly like you would do going back to any other sport you hadn't done in while - practise the basics and make sure all the skills are there before trying to go flat-out.

You probably know your own weak areas so work on them Smile

Thumbs Up

And the main way to find your limits is to fall off Smile.

I would suggest it's useful to fall off a few times to find your bikes and your limits. Otherwise it could lead to future times when you could save a nastier crash, if you knew how much everything could be pushed.

Not at all, one of my mates has been riding for about 20 years and only has his bike as a form of transport!!

He rides in all weather!

One tip for improving:
Get someone else to ride with and comment on each others riding styles.
Do the same piece of tarmac in both directions and feel the difference.

Penny Coin Penny Coin if you hear a rattel or it start to feel odd , stop ffs Wink and have a gander at your vital parts, ie brakes are tight wheel bolts ect Embarassed

Exclamation just becuase i can pass you going around a corner/round abouts dont try and follow me Razz

Idea Safer rider are confident ones, like g says find the limits of your bike and then you will only crash if your bike cant get out of the situation not becuase you havent got the skills to ride out of the situtaion. (though avoiding situtations is easyer :p)

and lastly
IF YOUR GOING TO BE A T**T DO IT SOMEWHERE SAFE

To some extent I agree. But you can improve your game without coming off! The key is to take it easy and build up your skill gradually. Don't go all out and try something, you won't get it right the first time. Takes practice and lots of it.

As the B meister says : "You're not as good as you like to think you are". Trouble is that it usually take at least 1 off to make you realise this. Rolling Eyes

Safe riding all.

Ride defensively and go on the bike with the mentality that everybody is out to get you.

I never stopped riding over winter so I haven't "lost" anything over it.

I did however loose some cornering confidence, due to the slippyness and my off in December.

A tip I can give is don't just jump on your bikes after a layup and think you can ride its wheels off straight away, just build it up do a trackday to gain confidence as It certainly helped me this weekend.

I agree totally, you're not going to learn anything useful by seriously over-cooking it and flying into hedge 1/3 of the way around the corner. Building up is the key.

I seriously under-estimated the severity of a turn on Saturday, was lucky to get away with it. Crashing would not have taught me anything new Smile

Smoto I noticed you said confident riders are the safer ones, I always thought this is the other way round cause I tend to mix confidence with cockyness, especially once they are too confident. Smile

I am really really reading these threads because I want to find out how random these events are or were these people pushing their luck on the busy roads.
Would you all say that most, if not all bike accidents are at speed.
I am confident on the road, I am always looking around rather than relying on mirrors, I am riding now thinking “When is it going to happen?”

No - although I'm sure the government and road safety partnerships want to push that message.

Depends on your definition of speed Confused
IMO, and that of others, the cause of accidents is often the inappropriate use of speed - that doesn't mean you're going over the limit.

e.g. Full NSL 60mph over a blind crest after just passing a farm might be inappropriate. If you have to ask why then you should get some more training!

Mind you, this is probably obvious to someone who's been on a bike for more than 2 hours and has some common sense.

Just some thoughts Karma

Yeah I totally agree Map, i don’t know about you but with my riding style I feel really confident on the road.
I do push it sometimes but I feel like it is within my limits and usually take a good look at the road ahead, I don’t make stupid over takes as I put my bike before my instincts.
Does this mean I should look out more?
I am hearing of people coping it on the roads and weather I know them or not it does make me think “How were they riding?”
If they don’t ride like me and had a more ‘Excessive’ approach to riding, I will feel a lot better.

All I can say is that I have a lot to learn. Will also be taking a CBT in August on a 125 just to get the feel for a more powerful bike, even though I had already done a CBT on a 50. How sensible is that Thumbs Up

Well that's 3 this weekend by my reckoning.
Couple of things everyone should consider.

Track tuition to learn how to trust your bike. It will normally do much more than you think it will i.e. corner faster, lean further, brake harder etc.
And if you really must throttle the bastid then think about this. On a track there's no manhole covers, everyone is going the same way and it's usually built to allow you to make a mistake without killing yourself.

Advanced rider course to teach you to think for every other numb fooker on the road. Unfortunately that's what you have to do to survive to a ripe old age as a biker.

Then if your smart enough to appreciate the difference between the two you might just make it through the summer Thumbs Up

Best to do this on the track
