Hi,
is a tzr 125 a good bike? good for a 17 year old?

Any bike is good for a 17 year old, whats the difference between a 17 year old and a 27 year old? nothing the 17 year old could even be a better rider.

Tzr125 is a cheap 2 stroke 125, so i rate it well, older but the price is based on this.

A friend of mine at college has that bike... three of us were standing round it discussing (as you do) and overall it seems a very good machine. He loves it to bits and has had no problems with it so far

I wouldn't pay more than about £8/900 for one personally... I dunno what anyone else thinks.

But I'd be careful buying off eBay, I had a nasty experience buying a bike from there. Something that originally cost me (my dad) £1000 (and that was expensive) ended up costing over £2500 and three bikes later, here I am.

Pretty solid and less volatile than the highly tuned aprillia or cagiva engines.

Top speed of about 90mph,

6 speed

0 - 60 in about 7.5 seconds

Good for tall people

Simple design, easy to repair/rebuild

Loads of parts on ebay and in breakers, but more for the pre 93 models

1991 onwards has front and rear disc brake, 87-91 has rear drum brake

Same engine as DT so many parts shared

Stopped making them in about 1998 - 2000 (not sure) as they failed emissions test.

Good bike to start with or move up to, cheap to take care of, loadsa tarty bits as well if you want them. Doesnt beat many other 2t 125s though.

I suggest you look at the different types of 125 around, for example:

Aprilia RS 125
Honda CBR 125R
Honda NSR 125
Cagiva Mito 125
Hyosung Comet 125
Sachs XTC 125


Can't think of any more off the top of my head, but weigh up the pros and cons and figure out finances and whatnot and see how you get on.

Good luck with the TZR if you get one that is, is it for your lad??
A good machine, don’t listen to all the horror stories, I know it can be daunting to hear about the thing blows up or the wheels come off at high speed (joke).
I would say a TZR, RD or RG is a good bet as you can access a lot of the bike easily, you can learn a lot about the 2 strokes from having an easily maintainable bike.
My TZR was a quick one, I didn’t do a lot to the engine, only cosmetics, I had a problem later with electrics but that was my fault!
