does anybody have any idea how often my 1991 mito should be rebuilt?? and also roughly how much would this cost? and is it a DIY job? thanks in advance (ive heard that the engine is practically bombproof)

a top engine re-bulid would be every 10,000-20,000 miles depending on how well the bike has been looked after (quality of the oil, warming up fully before riding etc.)

cost about £50 for a piston, £110 to replate a cyclinder if needed, gaskets about £30

a mate of mines 2001 mito evo,s big end bearing broke up at 5,000km and it was a well looked after bike.

How much the parts will cost depends on how bad the damage is. you really can't tell till it's appart.

You WILL need:

Piston
Rings
base gasket
Piston clips

You may need:

Head gasket
Barrel replating
small end bairing
Piston pin

Having an engine professionally rebuilt is expensive, but a mehanically minded person could do it on their own with a few spare hours.

pistons ushally come with the rings/gungon pin/circ clips

l think mitos have a "o" ring in the cyclinder head so no need for a head gasket, but a re-placement cyclinder head may be needed if it has substained serious damage.

cyclinder would only need re-plating if it was worn out or had substanded damage from a forgein object or bits of bearings/piston ring.

small end bearing only needs to be replaced if it is failing or has broken up (which would destroy the piston).


also note that some times the conrod can snap or the bid end bearing/thrush washers can break-up which would mean the crank cases would have to be split to get the crank out and have it re-built. Worst that could happen is that the conrod snaps and punchs a hole in the crank cases which is caused by a failing thrush washer on the crank which alows the conrod of move sideways more than it should (nearly happened on my KR1S!).

Top ends should be stripped every 8-10,000Km for a check and a new set of rings. Bottom ends should be inspected when the top is off.

My big end lasted 25,000km of abuse. Some cagiva engines can last 30,000km without any work, but it all depends on how you treat them.

Compared to the RS125 engines i would say they're better due to having better quality pistons and can take a more km's before they complain. But, they're both fickle engines.

I'd do the small end regardless - it only costs about a fiver, and you'll have it all apart so its no extra work. Same goes for gudgeon pin if the piston doesn't come with one.
