I don't know if this has been posted before.
Just heard that the camera 'safety' partnership has asked for speed cameras on the M4 between junctions 14 and 18.
The report said these will be set to the 70mph limit. Not sure if they'll dial in any % error in that Mad

This is despite motorways being one of the safest roads. I though they're only allowed to put fixed cameras at known accident blackspots. Anyone got any information if this is the case here?

Oh look, pass me the thin end of that wedge...

Not fixed cameras but mobile cameras parked on bridges which as long as its visible from 100m is okay, shame that by the time you're 100m away it'll have already caught you. Rolling Eyes

Hi

Seems that the local MP is not impressed:-

https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/vote_2005/england/4436849.stm

The BBC wrote:
M-way speed camera plan blasted

Speed cameras will be used to enforce the speed limit on the M4
Plans for speed cameras on the M4 have been slammed by a Tory candidate as being for Labour's "politically correct, money-making reasons".

James Gray, a candidate in the North Wilts constituency, said this was his "gut instinct" on hearing the cameras were to be installed.

From Wednesday, motorists who break the national speed limit on the Wiltshire section of the road could be fined.

A Labour party spokesman said they were there to help save lives.

'Politically correct'

"I fail to see how a speed camera can be politically correct," he said.

"Speed cameras are used as one of many means to help improve road safety in communities across the country."

But Mr Gray said if the Tories were voted into power, they would raise the speed limit on motorways to 80mph.

He said: "If speed cameras are designed to reduce accidents, then I support them.

"However if they are designed to raise revenues for the government or to be politically correct - saying 'aren't we being good putting up speed cameras' - then I don't."

The plan involves installing cameras from junctions 14 - Hungerford - to 18 - Bath - of the motorway.

Motorists caught speeding could be fined £60 and receive three penalty points.

"The M4 is virtually straight between those junctions," said Mr Gray.

"I cannot think of any dangerous stretches. I am not aware of any safety reason why cameras should be there."

'Speeding rate'

But Saira Khan, of the Swindon and Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership, said: "I'm sure Mr Gray is aware, as is everyone else, that we have to comply with the rules.

"We know that if we have cameras then the speeding rate goes down and the severity of casualties goes down too."

Paul Fox, the Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate, said speed camera laws should be enforced.

"They are a good thing because they are the one thing motorists take notice of and speed kills," he said.

Labour's parliamentary candidate for North Wiltshire is David Nash. He says hardly a week goes by without there being an accident between the two junctions.

"Bearing in mind the motorway is virtually straight the only reason for this has to be speed therefore I fully support the introduction of speed cameras on this stretch," he said.

Also running is Neil Dowdney for the UK Independence Party.

All the best

Keith

Agreed, I would like to see more evidence from these studies that have proved conclusively that speed is the major factor. I seem to remember MCN tearing one of these studies apart and showing the they misinterpretted the data. The range of figures for speed playing a major role in an accident was something like 4% if you look at it from one point and 33% from another less aware situation. Driver error seems to play a major role far more of the time.

I would agree that speed does influence severity.
