Ive tried moving it with a chain wrench & the strap type wrench but it just starts crumpling the fliter. How can I get it off? someone suggested whacking a screwdriver through the middle and turning it.
What do you guys think?

That's what I do with spin-on cartrige type filters.

Remember to lightly oil the o-ring on the new one when you fit it.

The only problem with whacking a screwdriver through it is that if you can't get it off after that you'll be stuck with a big hole.

Aye, but if you can't get it off with that, nothing is going to get it off other than a big stilson wrench. It does need to come off, it has already been crumpled with a chain wrench.

Would there be any advantage in soaking the seal in WD40 over night and then again before you try and take it off to try and get some lubication on the join, not sure it would help as the thread is in the middle of the filter, but worth a go.

Yeah I did give it a good sqiurt of WD40, I'll give it another try tomorrow. I dont think it's been changed for years & kind of rusted itself on. I got the chain wrench from halfords and its completley useless, it just starts cutting into the shell.

Sounds like a screwdriver and lump hammer job to me then! theres nothing like a bit of percussive engineering!
WN

Edit: just found it, what i used last time was a Halfords metal band filter wrench, seemed to do the trick, but the screwdriver option is the cheapest and probibly the most fun!

I had this problem the other day. Like everyone has said - a hammer and a screwdriver is the answer. Those chain wrenches are shit - I took mine back for a refund.

Hammer the screwdriver through the filter and use that as a lever to turn it Thumbs Up

you can get an adaptor that sits on the top of the filter and takes a standard 1/2" drive for a few quid

then you can torque it to the correct setting for next time

I can't see the need for a torque wrench. Finger tight is sufficient.

Success!! the hammer-screwdriver method worked a treat! although i didnt realise how sharpe the puncture was and cut my hand while unscrewing it ...yes I know im a whip! so anyone else attempting that one soon, be careful!
Also, with my new filter I got a new washer, it didnt fit over the thread so what was it for? anyone know?

why guess

there is a torque setting in the manual so why not use it

your idea of hand tight may be a lot more or less than mine and I don't fancy mine weeping or coming off at 11500rpm in top Rolling Eyes

I use a K/N filter it has a socket attachment on the end, so no messing about and it is cheaper than standard filter. Easy Peasy.

Cool

It was metal, do you mean where you drain the oil from the sump? maybe it was for there....too late now though because I've filled up with fresh stuff!
