My dt, which I've only had running for a couple of weeks has ground to a halt again today.

I'd been riding it for about half an hour and had just done 5 minutes on dual carriageway with it just about maintaining 65mph (I'm guessing it's restricted?). I turned off onto a country lane and it seemed to start loosing power, kept going for about a mile and then cut out almost like it had run out of petrol.

There was a small amount of smoke coming from around the spark plug and that bit of the engine was very hot. So I let it cool down for 15 minutes and tried to kick it over, but it didn't want to start and it felt like there was less compression. I tried bumping it with no joy and the exhaust made strange 'tshhh' noises.

Have now got it home and checked that the plug and it seems to be sparking ok. Tried bump starting it some more with G's help but it doesn't seem to want to go.

Confused

Anyone got any ideas what the problem might be?

Other than this it seemed to have been running ok. I've checked the kill switch, that it has petrol in it and I filled the two stroke the day before yesterday.

Seized? Holed the piston?

I don't think it's seized because it still seems to turn over fine.

There might be a hole in the piston I guess it did get pretty damn hot, might also be the rings?

Was hoping somebody might tell me it was something less serious than this. Doh! Neutral

When they seize they still turn over as everything contracts back down.

Ahh ok could be then; didn't actually seem to seize as such while I was riding it, unless it was a fairly progressive seizing, but nothing sudden. suppose it may also have seized just as I came to a halt.

Not sure how old it is but a gasket could have failed.

Or as said before seizure or the rings have disintegrated.

when you say it was getting very hot did you look at the temperature gauge on the dials? Sounds like you might have an auto lub problem or something as they tend to run for ever and ever if still resticted.

Should still start with lower compression if you have damaged the rings but they are only like £20 to buy new ones. Just check all the usefull things lean it over make sure the overflow s working/ reeds ect. ht lead

Good luck

Unfortunately the temperature guage shows the bike to be completely in the red from the moment I turn it on. Confused If it had of been working I probably would have realised the bike was getting so hot.

Was with you all the way up to 'auto'. Embarassed Laughing

I've tried kicking it over quite a bit, but with no joy. The compression does seem very low, as in pretty much non existant. Will give it another go tonight though if you think there's a chance it will still run and that I won't do any further damage by trying..?

Excuse my slowness, but which overflow should I be checking? Thinking

If you lean the bike over really far fuel should piss out just means fuels getting into the carb Thumbs Up. If it dont.. then start there Laughing

Auto lub, its just infront of the clutch cover theres the oil pump. Auto feeds the right amount of 2 smoke oil to the air/feul intake just before the reeds on your model. Would check that to make sure its working adjusted and getting oil if you do replace the rings ect(which it sounds like you need to do lol).

Just sounds like you rings have gone really, whip it apart and take it to shop. They shouldnt have don any damage to tha barrel so should be quite cheap as well, Thumbs Up

Temp gauge, lol you got water in it Wink (only useful gauge lol)

the heat could melted a hole on top of the piston or maybe one of your crank seals has given up the ghost and that would explain the smoking (gearbox oil being burned in the cylinder) Just a suggestion!

EDIT: didnt realise the smoke was coming from the head Embarassed
