How many people on here buy brand new bikes or scooter? and what are your views on the prices of bikes?

I'll always buy second hand... let someone else take the depreciation hit. Also, since so many bikes are bouight and hardly used (eg the Monster S4 parked outside Liverpool St, a Y '99 plate, with onlt 1500 miles on) then when the likes of me gets their hands on it, we get a decent machine for pennies...

I always buy new, mainly for the reason that I know it's been run in properly and that some numpty hasn't had the chance to play with it, like changing exhausts and things.

Another reason for new is that I know someone that owns a dealership so all my toys come relatively cheap.

Ive always bought second hand for two reasons,
1) You dont get the sudden drop in re-sale value the second you take it off the forecourt,
2) I would be too worried about tiny scratches or something, with a second hand bike im not to worried if a stone flies up and takes a little scratch off the side panels, because there are some allready there. I wouldnt enjoy riding a brand new bike because i would spend all my time worrying about it.

I bought my Fazer brand new. As it was my first proper (big) bike I wanted everything to be as hassle free as possible and it meant that it didn't have a shady history or problems that were going to come back and haunt me in years to come.

It was a brand spanker (still in the crate) but it had been pre-registered, so Yamaha could have more figures on the road basically, all car and bike manufacturers do this every six months just to say they're doing well! Rolling Eyes So, has a 53 plate but was registered in early 04.

Find a good dealer and they'll look after you too, which makes the bike buying experience better.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me.
Bought the bike below, basically to get rid of all the problems i had with 2strokes under a grand.

4 months later, it was stolen. £3100 down the pan. Fuckers Evil or Very Mad Middle Finger

After the hassles I've had with my bikes I want to buy new next time. I just want that feeling of knowing everything that's happened to it.

Yep. Bought a new bike last Saturday in fact. Bought new bikes since I had major hassle with a dealer and a used 2 stroke.

As said above, I'm the only one to blame if anything goes wrong with it, otherwise it's down to the warranty.

My zx6r was brand new and I would never buy new again. I had it for 1 year did 3000 miles on it and lost £2500 in value in one year. It even had full service history. If you find a bike that hasnt been abused and this is generally obvious 2nd hand is way better. Wink

I bought two new bikes this year

First was a 125cc Varadero on January 27th

Second was my CBF600 on March 18th

First bike was to get some riding experience on a bike that fitted me before I did my DAS

Second was after the pass)

First bike was brilliant to learn on it fitted my large frame and would start every time
Top that of with only losing just under £500 on the trade in for my CBF600 and it was cheaper than renting and shit load less hassle than a second hand banger for the same money. That and shopping for a £500 125cc that would fit me would have been more luck than anything else it was the best choice for me top that of with a guarantied buyer in the dealer it was a no brainier for me.

As for my CBF600 I bought new for all the reasons above and for then knowledge than my new baby would start every morning hadn’t abused and also had 2 years warrantee and brake down cover included in the price it just made sense to me.

And lastly it my new shiny thing and I could afford it

I prefer bikes that are almost new, not brand new as the depreciation is not such a cunt to you.

Also breaking in a bike can be a pain in the hole.

I bought brand new - 'cos Suzuki were selling off K3 600's for £5k at the end of 2003 - a bargain.

Even if I hadn't got the bike at such a price, I would happily buy new anyway - I'm not going to change my bike every year, so why worry about depreciation?

2nd hand bangers are always more fun!
Both my bikes have been 2nd hand, and both have at one point been off the road for some time (1st was written off, 2nd was a duffer), but that just gave me tinker time Very Happy . So I can now strip and re-build DNA50s and RX125s, Good eh?
At least with 2nd hand bikes you don't mind whether it gets mucky, or cuts out in the rain.

I bought a new bike once, thinking it would be more relieble. What a load of crap that bike turned out to be. By the time I had sold the bike it had cost me over $8000 ($3000 for the bike and $8000 in repairs).

Although you can't compare a 150cc 2-stroke with a GN250, so far the GN250 has cost me about $1300 ($900 for the bike and $400 in repairs (race head bearings, front brake cable, new tyre). The best thing about older bikes is that when things do go wrong you can pick up parts at a wreckers, rather than buying brand new.

Hi

Depends. Bought both and no doubt will in the future. Buying new is an expensive way of getting a bike, but on the other hand at least you know some twonk has not warmed the engine up by holding it on the rev limiter.

All the best

Keith

I bought my Hyosung comet 125 brand new because there was nothing around that was in a decent condition, it was a good price and a very good bike for the money Very Happy

As for the CBR I bought it 2nd hand due to the costs, I couldn't afford a brand new one and also I didn't want to spend ages trying to break it in.

Both have there ups and downs really Confused

I guess it depends how much I will use the bike and for how long. I have only bought nearly new so far (6mths, a few 1000 miles).

But I think seeing as I intend to keep them till they drop (hopefully with very high mileage on) new is a better bet for me.

As Kickstart said: If you get a bike owned by one of these fools (whilst camped at brands hatch we heard a few) that warmed their bike up at 1am in freezing conditions, by holding it at the revlimiter after it had been standing for probably 8 hours, you're in trouble.

I'll probably buy new again in the future unless its something unique which I really want. Apart from a few wee problems starting with the RS125 it has'nt given me much hassle so far and I also know that some herbert has'nt messed about with it. Problem is though that I think older sportbikes have more character than a lot of their new models. You could stick a Honda badge onto a Suzuki or Yamaha for example and not really be able to tell much difference looks wise.
