Alarm / security Advice Please

I'd like to invest in more security for my bike. Anyone have any advice or general good/bad experiences with Alarms, Locks etc ?

Big physical security is good.

An alarm is good if you'll hear it - no-one else will give a damn.

The best you can do is make it a hassle - if thieves really want it, they will take it.

Anyway back on topic, I agree that physical (and often visible security) is the best option. I am a firm believer in 'out of sight, out of mind' theory, granted it won't stop a determined thief (most measures wont) although, it can stop the opportunistic thief.

Good anti-theft devices I have read about include: Ground Anchor, Brake Disc Locks, Heavy Lock (Kryptonite, for example), Datatagging, immobilizer, etc...

Have a look at the RAC's advice on this topic. The RAC link is the first I happened to come across whilst searching for this information, have a search of the forum, theres plenty of info out there.

chain round the front and back wheel. I park my bike outside the first house of the street accross from me, i can still see it and the people at the house are good friends and let me put it there so they can keep an eye on it.

But i use a
Abus insurance disk lock
oxford chain
squire chain and padlock
cheap lidl chain

I've just learnt the unpleasant way so now i have:

Datatool System3 Alarm/Immobiliser
Oxford Boss ground anchor and padlock
Lidl Chain
Oxford titan disc lock
alarm on the garage
deadlock, side swinging doors and bars on the windows

If you tend to be near by (for example in work with the bike parked outside) I'm told that the pager add-on (available with most alarms) are pretty effective.

My brother has one and he says it works a charm. Notified him when someone bumped it. He got to the bike while they were still there.

No good if your alarm keeps going off though.

Read an article in MCN last week where a convicted Bike thief suggested putting a small padlock on your drive chain. The thieving b@@@&$ds cant see it there and so when they try and ride your pride and joy the padlock has the chain off and better still it also has those lovely people who like to take things that aint theirs off too:twisted:
