Anyone know what the viscosity of Scottoil is? The official stuff is quite expensive and if ordinary cheap 10w40 engine oil would do I'd rather use that.

Scot oil isn't that expensive. £5.50 for a few thousand miles worth.
Scot oil is water based and probably won't mix well with engine oil. engine oil on the chain also attracts dirt.

If you do use engine oil get th thinnest stuff you can (20W50?)

Chainsaw oil is about the closest and a lot cheaper especially if you have a local Agricultural type supplier you can use, failing that a DIY store.
