How do these things work/what do they actually do?
Been looking through some catalogues and they look like a hydraulic piston that you attach to the back of your bars and attach to the stem also . Do they just make turning the bars slower or what? im confused by them. ____________________ Its Not a Melon, Its Clearly a Lime!!

The idea is that it stops your bars flapping about at high speeds or when cornering, yes they use hydraulic pistons.
i was going to get one for my GS500 but couldnt find anywhere that did one... without me having to take down hundreds of measurements and mounting points etc... for them to create one =/ ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

Hydraulic dampers - a cylinder with a hydraulic piston with holes in it for the hydraulic fluid to pass through it. The size of the holes controls the rate at which fluid can pass through the piston, and so control the highest speed at which the piston and hence the bars can move.

The cylinder is fixed, and the piston is attached to the top of one of the forks. You can get into a situation where the bars flap violently and pretty much uncontrollably from one side to the other, particularly if you land a wheelie with the front wheel to one side - on landing, it gets whacked back past the centre, or whacked over to full lock. Either way, the wheel overcorrects itself and can set up an unstable growing oscillation - a tank slapper, which will spit you off eventually.
Steering dampers on the whole prevent the bars from moving quickly enough to allow a tank slapper.
