hey, im coming up to my 17th birthday next month and looking at 125cc. the truth is i either dont like them or not prepared to spend all my money rebuilding them because i think that i wouldnt be the easiest driver on it.anyway my point to ask is i have been driving a moped for a year now (ish) and have £2100 saved once i sell it. with the money can i afford a 400cc bike, test, 3rd party insurance?looking at zxr400 and they seem to be around £1000-£1500. what you lot think and how many lessons you think that i will need to pass for licence.oh and yea i do know it has to be 33bhp for years.

Do it, as its exactly what I did bar going for a 400. I went for a 500 instead as at the time 400's were maniacally expensive.

Do a few lessons on a 125 as I did, you already have road sense from riding your moped but taking a few lesson will iron out and bad habits you've picked up and get to know what standard the examiners want too.

But all I say is go ahead and do it.

nothing atall stopping you from doing your restricted access course (about 350 quid) then spending the rest of your money on any bike you want (any cc so long as you have it restricted then)

go for it

just to give you an idea of insurance a cb500 would cost a 17 year old about 350 quid with your restricted access (thats how much conpants pays for his).

Erm, are you kidding?

A CB500 TPO at 17 would be atleast £500, if not more!

Your money might be better spent on a cheap 125.

I bought a £200 125, rode that for 6 months, took £50s worth of lessons, passed first time with 3 minors.

Jumped on my 600 and rode off into the sunset.

Depends what 400 you want. My insurance at 17 on a GSXR400 was £1,000 TPO. All sports 400's will break down and die, like mine did and a few others on here. Get a 600 if you can afford it. They will be more reliable and my insurance only went up £300 at 17 to get a ZX6R. Get something like a bandit and you insurance will be like 20p as Jon B will tell you. Wink

It makes good financial sense, and teaches you a lot, I'm glad I spent my time on a 125.

400s are great bikes when they work but they can be a lot of hassle when things go wrong, a agree about checking the price to insure a semi faired 600 like a sv or fazer if needs must a bandit or divvy. while most 400s are over 10 years old you can get bits easily for more modern bikes, you have a much better chance the bike hasnt been clocked and the extra weight makes them more stable.

i say semi faired since you will probably drop it a couple of times and plastic is expensive
