i know it's probably a dumb question but are the chokes when their is no pressure on the throttle supposed to be open all the way?

with mine when theirs no pressure on the throttle they look like this (only open a couple cm's):

when the throttle is on all the way they close fully like this:

i'm sure it should be the other way around, because surely it's stopping air coming in if they close up when you pull the throttle down?

but are they meant to be open this much or has the bloke who took this photo disconnected the throttle cable for them to fully open (with the cable off mine it opens this much):

With the throttle fully open your carb slides should let air through. i.e should move completely out of the way.

looks like you've messed something up.
Does it run? is this something you've just done?

Need more background info.

the choke butterfly valve is not attached to the throttle.. only the choke lever moves the choke valves Wink

with the choke off,m they should be pretty much fully open tho...

if you look at the top there is an opening-this bypasses the main butterfly and feeds air to the engine and the pilot jets at idling speeds.

The choke opens a valve usually that allows more air and fuel in to the engine, thus aiding cold starting.

the choke, when fully "open" actually closes the valve, as this makes it richer, and hence easier to start...

youll find this will vary from carb design to the next. What i described was the action of my Mikuni CV34's and most other CV carbs and flatslides are similar.
