my bike i had for only 2 days now (not technically 2 days old but an 03 reg just over 1 n half years old) rising along today happy as larry Laughing the bike just looses power and starts dying so i hit the clutch n coasted to the side of the road. i thought "bloody hell i only put petrol in this morning and its on reserve already" Shocked but alas no not even switching to reserve could sort it, opened the tank and it was almost full. so there i am miles from home busted bike phone with no credit sat on my arse at side of the road thinking what to do. i fiddle around for about half an hour not knowing what to do and nothing comes of it, about 20 bikes past me none stopped to see if i was ok Sad then after about an hour my girlfriend rings me so i finally get to speak to someone, anyone some faffing later i get the bike home.

tried bump starting it and nothing, backfired a bit and spluttered but nothing.

took the spark out and it all sparks fine, checked the fuel lines and thier all good, the air filters working perfectly and the carb is getting air and fuel. the engine is in good condition and is maintaining compression inside which you can see by turning engine over with thumb over spark plug gap. all the parts seem to be working perfectly individually even the valves and timing chain i checked, been spraying quick start into the air filter at first then into the carb and finally into the engine itself and still will not start, please anyone got any ideas at all. im really totally out of any clue what it is all fuses are good everything the battery has been fully charged.

help!!!

Try a new plug in it anyway, they can spark outside the engine but not inside it.

Is the plug wet after you have been turning it over for a bit? because it should be.

Sidestand idiot switch living up to its reputation as the root of all evil?

If you are broken down at the side of the road again and could use some help, make sure you put your helmet behind the back wheel to signal this to other riders. They might have assumed you were just taking a break, especially if you were trying to speak on your mobile.

the plug is wet and slightly black around the tip, the plug im sure is as old as the bike so over 1 n half years, seems its highly likey its not sparking inside the engine and me and my mate couldnt understand why if it was sparking outside the engine, why would it suddenly stop working though?? Confused when i was riding along and the engine was warm

There is a difference between a spark, and a good spark. A good spark will be fat and blue and arc directly down from the electrode to the tang of the plug. A knackered plug can still spark but the spark may be weak, intermittant or arcing to the edge of the tang or even the rim of the plug. A bad spark can disappear when you subject it to high pressures in a hydrophobic vapour laden atmosphere (like inside an engine)

For the 2.50 it would cost it is worth a try.

waving frantically sometimes works too!

NGK B8HS for my 2-strokes. £2.50 to £3 each. I go through a lot although recently I bought six plugs, four of which were duff. I prefer Nippon Denso plugs but there is noone round here that sells them.
