Why not just go on non-motorway roads instead, then it won't be a problem?

Hi as i mentioned before both my parents are coppers so im quite up on the law you coud say, both a blessing and a curse i can tell you Rolling Eyes no bike under 50 cc can use the motorway and even if you are over 50cc being caught on there is game over, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, failing to display L plates on a provisional entitlement and driving uninsured (ins company wont want to know if you have a run in on the motorway) since you dont have a full bike licence both failing to display Ls and using motorway will probably be collated into driving whilst disqualified (as you have never qualified for a full bike licence which would be required to use the motorway) and on top of that is the no insurance. tax would be still ok though so every cloud has a silver lining i suppose Very Happy

cant see the police pulling you off the motorway as long as you arent speeding or doing something stupid, might want to take the L's and put them back on once off the motorway since the police might be doing spot checks near the event.

Houlsby what bike u got? My mate has a rs125 and he goes down the motorway all the time, he sed that he dont get no problems it depends on the bike really. If i was u i would take the non motorway roads to be on the safe side. How long is it to where u got to go if u went on the motorway?

If you were to get stopped, an imaginative copper would be quite within his rights to tot-up enough offences to ban you outright. If you had an old paper licence he would probably tear it up in front of you.

Missing L-plate = 60quid and three points PER PLATE

Driving outwith the terms of your licence = 6 points and a three figure fine.

Oh look, 12 points, that's a ban. Now pay your fine, don't drive for a year and pay four figure sums for insurance 'till you are thirty. Oh, and your driving test will cost twice as much and take twice as long when you are allowed to do it.

Worth the risk?

Been on motorways a couple times, both by accident... actually the same motorway, A1 leading onto the A1M... wasn't paying too much attention to the signs as I was overtaking a truck, noticed the green signs to turn to blue and think "uh oh". Luckly both times not seen a copper, got straight off at next exists both times... although on the comet it looks like a 600, only problem is the L-plates, doh.

Motorways are boring... I much prefer windy roads... although if u wanna get somewhere fast I spose they'll havta do :-p

Try www.map24.com, you should be able to calculate a route and set it to avoid motorways.

Just had a quick look.
Easy route - get on the A1 south of Doncaster (after the A1(M) bit) and just follow it down to Peterborough (A1 J17 - start of another motorway bit).

Attached a map of where to get off the A1 for the showground - I expect it'll be a case of follow the bikes!

BTW, Autoroute has the journey time at 2hours 15mins.

Kinda related, is it illegal to display L plates when they're not required. I think it's the tiredness, but I'd find it funny to see an R1/Fireblade/GSX-R1000 with L plates on. Rolling Eyes

It's not really worth the risk going with your L plates. I doubt you would get pulled if you take them off though, it's dangerous to pull people over on the motorway so the police only do it if they really have to

£40 fixed penalty fine unless it is a driving school vehicle.

The coppers would also stop you to ask why you aren't being accompanied by an instructor, you can technically ride an R1 on L-plates if you are training for direct access but you have to be accompanied by an instructor.

My dad whos a sergent in derbyshire police seems to say its not an offence to drive with L plates on, regardless of circumstance. Might not be too clever or what the highway code suggests but im pretty sure its not illegal

The simplest answer is you won't get stopped unless you do something to make them want to stop you, no one will know that you're meant to be on L plates unless they pull you over and you tell them.

I didnt have any problems after my L plates fell off and I took wrong turns onto motorways, ride vaguelly sensibly and I can't see any reason for you to get pulled over.

For planning a non-motoway route, use the AA Route Planner and tick the avoid motorways box. Smile

I was always under the impression that it was illegal to drive with L plates on if you were not a learner driver. That's what my driving instructer taught me. You learn something everyday!

personally i wouldnt, is it really worth your licence? dont risk it,
i got stopped with one L missing, it had genuinely fell off, i had a spare under the seat and offered to replace it there and then by the road side, he still issued me a 30 pound fine and no points.

I wrote away to them and stated that i was a student currently between jobs with no income and asked them for some other method of payment.. i got a letter in the post this morning saying that the officer issued the wrong kind of fixed penalty notice for my offence and that the notice was now void.

I was lucky, dont do it.
