I know this question comes up a lot, but anyway i just want to check i anyone uses GTX and has any clutch slipping problems.

Reason is i have 5 litres of the stuff.
I used it in the SR and the clutch slips a bit, but it already did so i dont think its down to the oil.

I now have a new bike (250 high revver) and i dont want to ruin its clutch. I also dont want to be spending 6 quid a litre on 2-3 litres of oil which i already have.

Thanks for any help,
Jason

I've used Castrol GTX (not magnatech) since new in my 125, and never experienced any clutch slipping problems other than those caused by my fiddlings with the cable adjustment.

Whether it's good enough for an engine which will rev to 18-20k rpm is another matter. I'd be tempted to say yes, but don't actually know. It certainly shouldn't cause clutch slip, it's just the other performance I'd perhaps wonder about at silly engine speeds.

The magnatech oils are different in that they have special low friction additives specifically for car engines. Remember, cars have dry clutches, so the oil is purely for lubrication and cooling of the engine. The low friction additives will tend to cause slippage of the wet clutch in a bike.

(They're also unneccesarily more expensive, especially for low performance engines).

The only thing putting me off the GTX, is that it is rated SJ.
Ive just had a little read and apparently SJ oil is environmentally freindly and makes clutches slip, maybe this is an exception.
I dont really understand oil ratings.

My old GPZ500s had a fresh fill of castrol GTX every 3,000miles for a total of 50k miles with never a problem, and I thrashed the knackers off it everywhere. I also used it in my CB125s and in the gearbox of my H100, no worries

I once put about a pint of magnatech in the GPZ (emergency top-up from a filling station, it was burning quite a lot of oil before we put new rings in it, due to being ridden flat-out everywhere) and the clutch started slipping at high revs. Stopped slipping again once it was drained and replaced with normal stuff.

One of our local driving examiners uses GTX in his work pan-euro and he is doing over 50k miles a year.

Castrol GTX is what i use in the FZR6 and the CB650 Nighthawk. never had any problems, (and it's only £13.50 for 5 litres Twisted Evil )

As far as car oils go you find the cheep stuff woeks fine in bikes.

Ive used with satisfactory results:

Asda Car Club 20-50 at 2.99 for 4.5litres in my GT550 for 50k and GSXR 1100 for the last 8k-is great when you have no choice and need plenty of oil. is good for keeping round to top up with.

Halvoline (texaco) Premium 15/40 in my FJ1200 which is a torque MONSTER and it never slipped the clutch.

Halvoline extra 10/40 semi synthetic in the FJ1200 and the GSXR1100.

Castrol GTX in my XBR 500, XJ600, FZ750, FZR1000

cheapo stuff from makro carlube i think-in my KH100 gearbox and my GS125.

Silkolene light gear oil in my MZ 301.
