I had an NSR125 '02 model. Cost me £1200 and about £400 insurance TPFT. I used it for college every day and work most evenings, about 10miles a day realy. I also did regular commutes to cambridge in most kinds of weather. I found that it was kind of uncomfortable for me around the town and for slow riding, but for the commute to cambridge, i found once i had done a fair few miles on it i became more comfortable as i got used to it. I had a supermoto 50cc before that and the wind and weather protection on the NSR was vastly superior to that, due to the fairing and screen. Personally i would go for the NSR mainly down to the weather protection if your riding through all kinds of weather, as it does make quite a large difference to your mental state at the end of a run if youve been kept comparitively nice and dry, and havent got neckache from the wind, compared to being bashed left right and center by the wind and pelted with rain from all angles Wink Also the NSR is pretty damn quick Very Happy and never failed to give me an ear to ear grin Thumbs Up

I would go for the dt because of the fun that can be had on it.
Zip too and from college during the week, pull out an ordinance survey map come the weekends and hit some muddy lanes and off road areas.

That's what I would do anyway.

Either will be a good first bike.

If you intend to do some distance riding I would go for the NSR; if you are more looking at town work I would go for the DT.

NSR Restricted was about 70mph mark, got 85mph out of it sometimes though.
De-Restricted i think you can hit around the 90-95 mark.
These are all indicated speeds remember, what you see on the clock Thumbs Up

Dt is a better bike to drop...less stuff to break ( ie fairings)

i know you said dont sugest other bikes,
but have you considered the varadero 125?
4t would save you money on petrol and 2t to svae up for your next bike after your 125....

i have had a 50cc dirt bike, which wasgreat but underpowere, crashed and droppe well for winter riding, and easy to clean. this will apply to the Dt125, a mate of mine had one when i had my varadero, he wheelied it all the time, so it must be easy to do..hooligan tool.

the nsr doesnt crash so well and is fairly thirsty on fuel.
and im not looking foward to trying to keep it in good nick over winter....

Had an indicated 105 out of my nsr before i crashed it into a golf Shocked

I recommend the dt mate, when you want to get a bigger faster bike you can convert the dt to totaly off road rather then selling it on.

thanks for the sugestion, yea i did consider a few 4t but decided that performance was more important and will hopfully be using it thought uni so going to spend fair bit to get a good one. think that the nsr is looking the better opion as much as i like the idea of having a bike thats good off-road.

The dt will stand up better to crashing as well, one small slide on an nsr and the damage bills add up, oh well get what you fancy! Smile

i used to travel a 50mile round trip everyday through-out the year to college and back up here in scotland, split evenly between an AR125 and an MTX125...

I was out in all weathers, nothing stopped me, gail force winds, snow, ice, floods.. sometimes i even had to ride with a broken throttle cable, sticky rear drum (could only use back brake when i needed to otherwise i had to get off and unstick it lol)..

I definitely preferred the MTX to ride on in the winter, and still in the summer. I don't think trail bikes are uncomfortable and definitely give you more view of the road ahead.

If you plan to use the bike over summer i would say the NSR (if you're more road biked orientated).. but if you plan on keeping a bike for a good while i would say the DT would be a better choice..

and probably a better bike to sit your test on.

just depends on what you want from a bike really.. personally i'm not a speed freak and will probably getting a big(ish) thumper of a trail bike rather than horsing it around the twisties in a big road bike.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with whatever bike you decide on.

Personnally i would go for the NSR i rode mine to and from college all through the winter rain or shine and it was fine. If your looking to buy an NSR i have a 99 NSR for sale in the exchange and mart section.

I had a DT and my mate had an NSR. Personally I prefered the DT. Much more comfortable to ride, better view whilst on the road. Derestricted with a few add ons it could easily match NSR performance and you can offroad it too!!! Curbs are no match for them nobblies.

I think the most important thing with a 125 is not to spend to much money on one (my opinion). You'll get used to the power very quickly and want something bigger within a month or two. That's when you need to get the serious cash together for an R1 or something Wink

I would rather have road tyres than nobblies in the wet or at anytime on the road for that matter!

I can totally appreciate what your saying here but I gotta say, I never had any problems and I rode in all conditions like a nutcase. Oh apart from drain covers!! But then they're best avoided even with road tyres in the wet.

i used to have a crosser on the road and i had some seriously scary experiences in the wet.

i would rather have all the grip i can get my hands on especially in the wet!

Until yesterday, I had FULL ENDURO SPEC tyres on my derbi senda, those things where pretty much like motocross knobblys and they handled superb wet and dry, maybe it was tread pattern but get it out of your head now, knobblys are fine on the road and DTs don't even have knobbly tyres they have a road/enduro tyre where the tread is ideal for road riding. As for what bike to get I'd say the DT, i'll be buying one shortly, wheelies, offroad.....no need to say anymore.

I'm really keen on a road legal 125 crosser, but I think its out of the question when I have two 125's already Sad

Just love seeing them fly past with their engines screaming. And they're high up, so you can see a bit further hehe. Sat on a DT125 once, thought bloody hell this is massive, and I'm 5'11.

Maybe you weren't going quite as fast as other people, especially as you were on a 50cc? I have seen plenty of cases of people sliding all over the place on the road thank to mx style tyres.
As standard the DT comes with tyres that are 'acceptable' for road use I believe, but don't offer the grip levels a decent road tyre does still.
