its easier for most people to negociate by phone/email anyway

Dont buy it, do your test and buy a bigger bike you then already have £1000 + towards a bigger bike. You will only loose money when it comes to selling the 125 on again.

Should be able to get him down to £1600 without too much trouble I expect.

Unlike epz I would say you should go and see it, preferably with an envelope containing £1600. If it is good bike and you're happy with it then simply say "I like the bike and I'm happy to give you £1600 in cash right now", almost guaranteed he'll be happy with that.

i know but i decided this as want to be driving a bigger bike and get experience with gears...i dont mind losing a bit of money if it means that i get experience with a bike with gears and have fun on it.

I'd start lower, offer £1450. Then let him refuse. Offer £1500, then again let him refuse, if he does then offer £1550 as you maximum. And then if he won't do the deal then begin to walk away and say you'll have to think about it.

At that point if the guy has any sense he'll accept your offer. Do not, under any circumstances tell him you have £1600 and thats your max, he won't let it go for £1600 in that case cos he knows you have that ammount. Smile

I think Craig is right. Offer him a lot less than he's asking, and then you've got space to negotiate.

If you tell him you can't pay more than £1600, he won't sell it for less than that, even if he would have otherwise! Bear in mind that sellers usually optimistically price their bikes and are often willing to come down quite a bit if you push them.

If you don't like negotiating, ask him what's his lowest price and make him bargain himself down Very Happy

i did what your planning

100 quid cbt

i spent 1700 on a 99 RS125

spend 500-600 quid on it, had it off the road etc of ages

sold it for 1400

bought a 97 zxr for 2300 and its far better, my miles

in retrospect id just do my test and wait a while for a 4t, only prob in possibly higher insuance by like 200£

I don't know many people who would advertise something in the paper and not expect to be haggled down Confused

Never under any circumstances tell the seller how high you are willing to go, for the blindingly obvious reason pointed out above. Make a very low offer that he wont accept(something like £1300), then when he looks shocked ask him what's the lowest he would really want to part with it for. You now have two figures with which to haggle between. If I was you I would be looking to get it for £1500. Unless the bike is obviously worth more, or he doesn't understand the idea of haggling, then it shouldn't be too hard to get it for that price.

But I would go with what someone said above and buy something cheaper.

yea i see what you mean its a 99 rs125 but has 300miles only (stored in storage for 5 years as owner was loaded) he had a buyer was paying cheque and giving me a look tomorrow, i think i will do a very low offer and use "it is 6 years old" as the reason and see if i can for £1500 as need new jacket, helmet and gloves (has them all atm but are all crap)

the reason i wasnt sure was when i told my dad this he said ill just piss him off and insult him and he'll stick to full price.

so offering is low the right way?it does make sence!
