Go by fit, not brand.

DONT use your old mans, fibre glass helmets have a life span of 5 years, poly have a lifespan of 3... and its to fit someone else so wont do you any justice in the event of a crash, you can pick up cheap "kiwi" lids for about 45 pound from local shops, get one of those, safer....

i got a nice lid from www.getgeared.co.uk , the "streegfighter Intergral" took two days to get here, great service Thumbs Up

sure other people will have some other ideas.

sunlight breaks down the resin that holds the composite together, i personaly dont belive the 3-5 years but for £50 is the risk of being a vegetable worth it

thanks for the replys guys, just i'd heard £50 helmets would leave me more at risk than a more expensive/better helmet.

they all tend to do the same thing, more expensive ones tend to have better designs so are quieter/lighter or just cooler but if you get on out a shop i has to meet the whatever standard that should protect you head.

If you check out last months issue of RIDE magazine, they did a test of 28 different helmets.
Some of them didnt pass a spike puncture test, as the european legislation doesnt require it to pass standards.
Really opened my eyes to the fact that all helmets are not made equal.
But it wasnt only cheap lids that failed, and some of the cheap ones did really quite well.
The Shoei Raid II came out tops i think. £205

I've scanned the final list of the helmets. Its in order of finishing. Scores are based upon Impact 1-20,spyke test (0-10.....0 is fail,10 is pass),Strap quality 0-10 and road testing 0-25

Hope this helps your choice making. But remember fit over fashion Cool

The £45 FM Sabre would get my vote from that list. 56 out of 55 Smile

Would want a plain one though.

Its amusing that the UK wont allow Snell M2000/2005 apporved lids to be worn, when those standards are much stricter then the ECE standard. MY Simpson bandit is ECE and snell M2000 approved, and snell is also stricter than the old british standard (whic is still stricter than ECE).
