Jesus, they've got tough on the MOT now. £300 on a perfectly good R1 just to get it through an MOT.
They failed it for things it passed on last year. If your number plate is anything but standard it will fail and the MOT guy can fail it for anything he considers dangerous.
He failed me on the gear link that goes through the frame as it moves slightly, brake pads that are still actually ok, 1 pilot bulb, 2 tyres FFS!, No markings on exhaust, non standard number plate, headrace bearings and a loose LH instrument cluster that you have to force to make it move.
I'm going to do the things I think I should do like the bulb, number plate and exhaust and if they fail it again I'm going to appeal which means not touching it for a few weeks until the Ministry check it.
I got the impression that they thought I would fix some of the things with them. Yeah right .
Anyone had similar experiences lately? |

Hi
Does sound a bit harsh. They have always been able to fail it for anything they consider dangerous, and the bulb is required (although some places will overlook it as you always have your lights on), and the numberplate is definatly getting clamped down on officially in MOT test.
Slightly worn gear linkage really is taking the mickey, exhaust markings are irrelevant as long as it is quiet and is not marked "Not for road use" and I think the clocks would need to be very loose to warrent a fail on them for being insecure.
Find another MOT station. Maybe they just got grilled by the ministry, or are under some kind of warning.
All the best
