hello.
im new to the site, ive been readin through a load of the posts and i must say its been very helpful.
im thinking of doing cbt soon and getting a 125 some just want to get some info on gears, ive never ridden a bike with gears before and after reading through some posts i read that the gears go;
6
5
4
3
2
N
1
and want to get a bit of info,
when you are in neutral you have to click down in to first and then up in to second and so on?? (is that correct) if so what do you do to make sure you dont go back into neutral? (is that possible)
also if you are going down the gears say from 4 down to neutral do you click down to go into 3 then down to 2 then what? do you have to go down to 1st then click up to neutral??
also how do you check you are in neutral befor starting the bike up
SORRY IF THEY SOUND SILLY!!! but im new to this bike stuff and want to get clued up on a few things before i take the cbt!!
(and i will be taking a geared cbt)
cheers |

Ditto. The sidestands always a good one...
Gears are easy, they sound difficult when you are trying to explain them out of context, like most things. However, when you get on the bike, they are really very easy to get used to and it is a lot more fun than riding a twist and go (IMO). The clutch is helpful for doing rolling burnouts in the garden ____________________ Bikes: too many, too much for one man to maintain anyway. |

Much like my CBR last night which decided to create it's own neutral between fourth and fifth whilst I was trying to keep in front of another, larger bike. Dammit.
Damian, you will have no problems with the gears, you will find that they actually feel natural. As for shifting between first and second it does vary from bike to bike.
Some bikes have an easy neutral to find and you will often find yourself in neutral when you intended to be kicking up to second. Likewise, there are bikes that are tough to get into neutral. My first 125 was an absolute pig for this and I would kick between first and second for ages without ever getting it into neutral. Rolling the bike forwards or backwards with the clutch in can often just help getting it into neutral in this case.
Good luck ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

Neutral can be found in between every gear
When you go for your CBT they will teach you every thing because they expect people to turn up who have never sat on a bike.
The best/easiest neutral to go into is between 1/2 because you can go straight into 1st and take off. ____________________ Zhongyu ZY50, Aprilia SR50, Motorhispania RX50, Aprilia RS125, Honda VFR400 nc24 and my corsa

i was fine with gears, first time i tried them i could do them (that was doing me CBT) only thing i had problems with was finding the 'biting point' pulling off kept stalling. it seemed to be loads of slack for the clutch then a very tiny bit to hold to pull off did it a coulpe of times but i then had to move to the moped cos i was 16 and had to do that on the road. |

gears are easy to learn, by the end of your cbt day there not much of a worry, my worry was remembering to cancel my indicator and not look like a fool. with gears, mine hits neatural from second when i go high revvs but if i giv it another half a second it will click up to second fine. one thing not to do is when your coming up to a junction make sure u use engine breaking as then you know what gear to take off in again should the traffic start to move, on my cbt i was coming up to lights, the traffic started moving, i had put my bike into first thinking we were guna stop off we went, i let me clutch out, felt like i had stopped dead cuz i was still goign 20 or so mph. pulling away is harder then gears and you will be fine, every one worrys about there cbt, i know i did now i got my full test coming up :S ____________________ Ride Fast, Brake hard, don't fall off! |

The main problem I had when I was on my CBT was that I kept dumping the clutch and stalling the bike... Remember to let the clutch out really slow... And keep it held in a tiny bit when you start moving... Pick up a bit of speed and SLOWLY release the clutch fully |
