You won't be able to just join Traffic. Everyone has to start at the bottom so to speak then specialise after you have some service and experience. Might as well forget traffic there's next to bugger all of them nowadays, the majority of forces have run them right down in proportion to the increase of tossers you see now on the roads. Even the motorways are now being patrolled by the Highway Agency "Police" with regular police just there as a token presence.

As far as I understand you need to be a normal cop for 2 years before you can join traffic division, and you need to be in traffic division for a while before you can become a bike cop.

But don't quote me as I could be completely wrong.

The 2 years probation period is right, but it takes a fair bit longer to get into the specialised departments as everyone else is also trying to escape to them, so join the queue. Mr. Green

That explains the pseudo 'police car' look that these Highway Agency vehicles have. From a distance, you'd be pressed to know the difference as its very close to the real thing.

I'm assuming they have no powers to stop/arrest for speeding but would they be in communicado with the real rozzers?

The trouble is, every bugger else thinks that. The police and the public services in general are not easy to get into in the slightest. Get into the police first, and then worry about what you're going to do next. Getting in in the first place is where I think you need your biggest break.

Traffic Police are pretty much a thing of the past. It is now "Roads Policing" which basically means you respond to the same jobs as beat officers, ie fights, domestics etc etc. The only difference is that you would also be the first choice patrol to attend accidents etc.

You would need to do your 2 years as already mentioned and then apply for positions as they come available. The problem is that to get into Roads Policing you need to be a class 1 advanced driver.

That sort of training is generally not provided for beat officer duties.

In short these specialist areas are fairly difficult to get in but your real problem is actually joining in the first place.

Who knows what will happen in 2-3 years though. There are talks of police force mergers to drastically reduce the current number.

One day it may all be the Met.

Based on your attitude I can guarantee you won't get the job.

Hi

National pay is as follows:-

Starting 19,803
Wk 31 22,107
2 23,388
3 24,819
4 25,599
5 26,421
6 27,147
7 27,849
8 28,740
9 29,781
10 30,477
11 31,092*

So basically £22k once out of training. Add £6219 for a London weighting. Also free rail travel in London for the met. Overtime is pretty good (especially good fiddles to be had there, such as the time off in leiu schemes). 22 to 30 days holiday depending on length of service.

All the best

Keith

T.C, a member on this board is a retired traffic policeman, with some 20 years of experience behind him.

He should be able to put you right. Although he doesn't post a lot here. I believe he got in a little quicker than most because he had contacts that were in the same field but usually, it takes you a good few (5?) years to get anywhere near a bike. Seems everybody wants to be a policeman these days so that no doubt makes it harder to get in in the 1st place.
