Other than the satisfaction that you know you can do it?

I think not. I cant do it, but I know people that can. However they dont do it during normal riding, only just when they feel like doing it for the purpose of showing off or wearing their sliders!

I hang off, but I dont get my knee down.

Your thoughts...?

In my opinion, no. Knee down in racing is more about gauging your lean angle. I dont really think it has any relevance in road riding.

That said, most people do it because it makes them feel good, like wheelying! You dont have to do it, but its still fun.

An interesting point: years ago I got pulled over for hanging off the bike. Although I wasnt doing anything illegal, I was given a stern talking to, and advised not to draw attention to myself.

The whole 'point' of sitting off your bike is to keep the bike upright, which inturn leaves a bigger footprint (more rubber on the road). Knee down, to me, is an indication of how far I've got left to lean before I start to reach my bikes limits of lean, ie my pegs touching down.

Probably no point, but it is tremendous fun and highly addictive. Until you crash it. Crying or Very sad

Hanging off is definitely useful when road riding as it can give you that little bit extra safety margin.

Getting your knee down would also be useful if you're going fast enough to justify it - but very few people ride fast enough on the road to justify 'proper' knee down on most corners.

The local authority near Bishops Castle obviously believe that placing your knee on the road whilst riding is far safer... There were signs all along a nice twisty A road showing a guy with his knee down saying "Ride safe, Think ahead"

You should alwas ride with a safety margine. If you go into every corner with the intension of getting yer knee down then wha are you gonna do if it tightens on you?
Being confident with those angles of lean is fine for when you need it but you shouldn't be trying to do it all the time.

On the other hand, if you know the road well and know where it can be done safely then why not? Doing it again and again adds to your confodence and therefore, gives you eve more of a safety margin for when things go tits up.

Knee down doesn't mean you're at the limit.

On track I do try to use it as this - I hold my knee at just above the point I would expect it to go down when I'm riding at a speed I know the bike can handle. That way if it does go down I know I'm starting to push the limits (of course, if I don't crash, then I realise it's probably my own limits rather than some one else's).

On my rs250 I can lean the bike pretty much twice as far once I've initially got my knee on the deck - and having my knee down is useful to know how far I can lean.
Still, on the road, I mostly get my knee down 'gratuitously'.

While getting my knee down didn't help me ride faster initially (by the sake of doing it), because I could get a better feel of lean angles and the road it did lead me to be more confident at higher lean angles.

I've done it a few times not really thinking. After learning KD I hang off the bike alot more in corners. If I go into a corner hot I have to lean further and where I'm already hanging off the bike my knee will touch down even though I'm not hanging off as far as I would for KD normally.

Hi

Angle of lean is unlikely to be a limiting factor on the road (how far you can see is far more relevant), so not really relevant. However plenty of people land up going slower just to get their knee down.

All the best

Keith

On the road it's generally just for fun and a pose. Nothing like a nice long 70+mph knee-down in front of a crowd of gawping onlookers Smile

Nothing like stuffing another bike/car on the outside of a roundabout while hanging off like a loon, leaning the bike over so far that passing cars can read the "unleaded fuel only" on the tank while accelerating and leaning further and further...
...showng off.
...but fun Thumbs Up Smile .

See no need for it personally but would be useful incase you do need to lean further should you get yourself into trouble. You will then get yourself out of it. I have no desire to do it personally.

In the case of NSR125-kid he has just proved exactly the time and place not to practice a "knee-down" moment. Not sure I would want my head to suddenly meet a bumper personally. Rolling Eyes
