cleaning bike up

hey guys i was just wondering if anyone could suggest how to clean up the engine on my bike, it has been sitting for years and the laquear has corroded and lots like bird shite on the engine casings. I want it off as it ruins the bike, its worse on the clutch cover and the opposite side cover, not so bad on the barrels. I've tried autosol and fine wire wool which worked a treat on the frame but its not touched the engine.

wire wool didnt work how bad is it!!!
try a bit of wd40 and keep rubbing then autosol it again with wire wool again! you wont get it totally mint but it will lose the corroded bird shite look!
im surprised though the wire wool didnt work the first time!

Sounds like road salt build up which quickly becomes Calcium Carbonate. It's a bugger to shift. Try a water softener on it first.

First thing is to strip whats left of the laquer off the engine....

& then attack whats left with wet brillo pads for starters & see how far that gets ya.

BTW, *laquer* is just (the wrong name for) clear coat, paint doesn't *corrode*..

zoffo think you are right actually about the calcium carbonate. I think the bike was just put in the garage and left, wasn't cleaned first etc. There was old dried petrol and everything in the carbs as well where it wasn't flushed through before being stored, but anyway......

how is laquer/laquear supposed to be spelt as i had it as laquer it picked it up in spell check and suggested laquaer which doesn't look right! Rolling Eyes

if you are very carefull not to get it in the frame or bodywork you could probably use brake fluid or paint stripper.

attacked the enginer cover with autosol and wirewool again and it came up a lot better. Still loong way to go though Sad

An assortment of wire brushes may help - just scrub at it until all the laquers been removed - try wet'n'dry for really tricky bits. Not sure what the engine looks like on your bike, but I'd be tempted to respray with VHT paint to get a nice all round finish - obviously some intricate masking will be required. Then maybe laquer over the top (if it will resist the heat)
