hey guys.

when i start my bike... cold. it will only goto 1k revs (with throttle) and not go any higher (blip throttle) and when u let go of the throttle it cuts out.

but after 5-10 seconds it revs fine...

Sounds like it's running on 3 cylinders for a while?

could it be the plugs need changing?

Drummer

Does the weather/temperature affect this at all or does the bike do this every time, regardless of the weather?

Hi

As above.

However quite likely it is the plugs. Worth taking them out and having a look (which reminds me that I really must replace the plugs in my FZR). They are cheap and easy to replace anyway, but have a look at the condition.

Any idea which cylinders are not working? Put some water on them and see which ones take their time drying off as the exhaust warms up.

There are a few things it could be. Partially bunged up carb. Valve clearances (although on a shimmed engine they normally close up, and that normally results in more problems as they get warm). Carb dumping fuel down into one cylinder when parked. Could even be the first sign of the head gasket going.

Any other symptoms?

All the best

Keith

no other symptoms... but i did run the bike with minus one downpipe connected (not to my knowledge... thought it was just a hole) so it could be one cylinder ran very lean? damaging the plug?

Hi

Cheap solution. Find the cylinder that is not firing when you start it. Then swap the plugs round and see if the problem moves.

Also see if the cylinder that is not firing is the one that had the exhaust missing, although I would not expect that to affect the plug much (not sure what it would do to the mixture on that cylinder, but a very lean mix is probably more likely to damage the exhaust valves).

All the best

Keith

clutch.... easy.

how is it easy?

what tools do you need. how many hours? the garage said it would be about £40-50 for plates/springs/cable/oil/gasket. and 2-3 hours labour

Hi

Plates are about £40. Tools required are an allen key set and a 10mm socket. About half the job is taking the fairing panel off and putting it on again, then a bit of fiddling with the adjuster on the sprocket cover. It might take you a couple of hours, but probably under an hour for an experienced professional.

Brief description.

Take the r/h fairing panel off, take off the clutch cover (about a dozen allen key bolts) and marvel at the clutch you find. Undo the 5 bolts holding the pressure plate on (each has a spring under it) and take the plate off. Then slide the plates out.

Put the new friction plates in (it will alternate one friction plate and one steel plate), put the pressure plate back on (not there is normally a mark to show which position it goes back in) and put the bolts and spring back in and tighten them up.

The oil level is low enough that on the side stand little / no oil will come out.

Note that the new plates should be soaked in oil for a while before installation.

All the best

Keith

so it's fairly easy to do then?

do the friction plates/steel plates have to go in any particular order? (how many are there?)

might attempt this when i get paid (monday). prolly Fork it up though.

don't wanna fork out £30 an hour labour. will the cable need adjusting when it's fitted? how easy is that to change?

Hi

No particular order with standard stuff, just alternating between a steel plate and a friction plate (think there is one more friction plate than steel plate).

The cable is easy to adjust, once the l/h fairing panel is off (just to get clearance for a screw driver). Take off the rubber cap from the actuating mechanism on the sprocket cover. Slacken off the lock nut. Then (from memory) tighten the adjuster to take up all the free play then back it off 1/4 of a turn and tighten the lock nut.

All the best

Keith

if i undo the locknut... should the bolt(the lock nuts on) turn?
if it does... whats wrong?

Hi

It is fairly loose so often the lock nut will turn the adjuster. You really need to hold the adjuster while you tighten the lock nut.

All the best

Hi

Just normal engine oil. I have some heavy duty springs in mine, but seriously thinking about sticking some standard ones back in.

All the best

Hi

Probably not. If it is clear for a short while, then "smokey" then clear, it is probably water in the exhaust boiling off as it heats up.

All the best

Keith
