What's the bike and where is the sound coming from. Try to be as accurate as possible. Also is it whilst moving or when still. When warming up only or all the time. Or in a certain area of the rev range?

Dont forget the year/model designation of the bike as this will make things easier to work out.

Do this and then people will answer.

Check the condition of your chain and sprockets. What bike is it? It could be valve clearances, but they don't normally fall out of adjustment that quickly. It could easily be a loose nut or bolt somewhere, not neccesarily from the engine at all. Is the engine running hot and noisy - are you running low on oil? Does it happen all the time (with or without the clutch pulled in?), or only under a decent amount of acceleration? Is there any power loss?

A tapping sound means your engine has become stale!

To solve this, you need to refresh your engine. Mix a dash of lemon juice and some fresh ginger into a 50/50 blend of vinegar and petrol, and put it in the petrol tank, then turn the engine on, add some washing up liquid and rev the engine hard.

When you can smell lemony/ginger tones coming from the exhaust, the engine should be clean and fresh, and the only audible tapping sounds should be coming from your rhythmically-charged feet as you listen to the blues while cruisin' the freeways on a sultry summer afternoon.

Eh?

Anyway, check your chain, see if its slack. My chain was ultra slack, but before I checked, I could hear tapping noises as well. Turned out to be the chain so loose it was tapping on the side of the swing arm.
