PostPosted: 15:13 - 03 Aug 2005    Post subject: Tyres (yet again) - X-Ply to Radial switch? Reply with quote

Just noticed that my bike original spec is for X-ply tyres and that's what appears to be fitted. However, I've heard good things about the radial alternatives.

So is there any safety or handling issues in fitting radials if the original spec says x-ply?

Any advice welcome. Thanks Thumbs Up

Hi

Not much, but check you really can get appropriate size radials, and avoid mixing them (and a radial front with a cross ply rear is illegal).

All the best

Map, what bike is it?

Also my take on things is if it ain't broke don't fix it, also bike manufacturers spend millions on bike design and use the tyres they think are suitable for the job in hand.

I personally see no benefit over Radials to Cross Ply's other than the extra cost that Radial tyres normally carry with them and the slightly wider tyre choice, but dependant on the bike this maybe miniscule.

The radials would actually save me about £30 on the pair Shocked
Cost isn't the only consideration, I'd prefer just to have the choice.

Radials also tend to last longer for the same level of grip.

All the best

It's the way the tyre is built up with different layers.
Radial goes around and crossply or bias goes across.
Each offers advantages and disadvantages in terms of performance, strength and wear.

You can tell the type from the code. Radials will have R (or ZR) before the rim size. Xply will have nothing or a dash (and Bias may have a B).
e.g. 110/70 R17 is a radial where as 110/70 -17 is xply.
