Howdy!
Knowing nothing about the cost of repairing the paintwork on my bike, I thought I'd ask if anyone else thinks what I've been quoted is a bit, eh, high!??
Had a small slide along the road a few weeks ago and after replacing all the broken parts, today I finally got round to getting some quotes to get the the paintwork sorted. Now being in Glasgow there are almost no bike painters, so I went to the only one in the yellow pages.
When I got there this bloke, the painter, and his boss told me they weren't sure what type of paint my bike had, something to do with how it's painted at the factory. He said it could be either just normal base and the colour on top of it or something to do with it being layered, I'm not sure, he was rabbiting on a bit but he said one was the cheaper to repair and the other more expense. So they both disappear to find out what paint coat my bike has and the painter bloke appears with a razor blade, scrapes some paint off and guess what he finds........mines has the expensive paint!!(Funny, I thought he would say that ). Now for the best bit, he said it would take a week cause he would need to paint the whole fairing, also meaning I'd loose the SV650S stickers, oh and it would be £225.............WTF, £225!!!!! And to make matters worse he said that would be for cash, so he could dodge the VAT!
The picture below is what I'm talking about(sorry about the dodgy picture, it's from a camera phone). The paint has been scrapped away and the surface is a bit ruff on the leading edge of the fairing, but that's it!!
Sorry about the long post but is this bloke taking the piss or are the plastics on bikes difficult and expensive to repair??
Ta! |

Just consider yourself lucky it isn't a candy red Z-series kawasaki. They have something stupid like a six coat finish. Costs up to a grand to do a full respray on a candy red Z1300 (without badges)
For a wierd finish on a full respray, I wouldn't consider two hundred and odd quid out of the ordinary. If it is WORTH that is another matter entirely.
Can you not just T-cut the worst of it out? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

You'd probably be better off looking out for new plastics on ebay or at breakers if you were going to actually spend that ammount...
Maybe wait a while and spend a bit more changeing the entire colour scheme (purple, yellow? ooooh the choices!) ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Do you actually need to get the paint work sorted now?
Sure it will look like it's not been crashed, but unless you're selling it, does that matter?
Presumably the bike still runs fine with your current paint and does all that it would do if you spent a load of money sorting it . |

Hi
Entirely possible that is a fair cost. Not only difficult to spray, but it will also need to match the existing colour on the tank quite closely (not that easy).
Might well be cheaper to buy a new panel. Or just respray the complete bike!
I was chatting to the guy I use for resprays and his comment was that the ZZR600 was a pain on the early colour ones. Paint alone costs him well over £200 for a respray.
All the best
