PostPosted: 10:20 - 16 Aug 2005    Post subject: Any bike being clamped? Reply with quote

...asking this question as I've been visiting my mother in hospital.

The parking is barrier controlled yet I've been riding round and parking up on an island part (central flower bed with semi-circular paved area at end the right size for the bike.) So at least I'm not taking up a car space!. This also means I'm not paying the £1.50 rate. The other night I finally walked past the company running the car parks warning signs (they're not positioned so you can read them while driving in). Reading it I'm a little concerned in case some jobsworth decides my bike's fair game for a clamp.

However, I don't know if a car clamp would fit a bike, and if it was tried would it be likely to cause any damage (thinking brakes/disc/forks here).

Any advice or other peoples experience welcome Thumbs Up

If I caught someone clamping my bike he'd need more than a hospital bed.
I don't think the carwheel clamp fits a bike but the devious b4stards that use them could invest in a shackle from halfords for wallies.
It would be the best 'penalty kick' up the arse I'd ever take if I caught the shite putting it on a bike.

Car clamps don't fit bikes.

However... they only need a chain and padlock...!

Best thing to do would be to go speak to them in the office. Find out the score. If they say "you can't park here without paying", take a puck with you and stick it on the grass just outside of the carpark! Very Happy

What's a "puck"? Apart from an ice hockey ball like item.

A (usually) plastic disc, sometimes with little spikes on the bottom, that you put under your sidestand to stop it sinking into soft ground, like grass.

Alternatively, find a flatish rock. Works for me.

For what it's worth, my bike got clamped once, I don't know if it was a special clamp or not.

I got a mate and a trailor, hoisted it in, and then cut it off at home. Never heard sinse.

I did think the contact details for getting a clamp removed maybe on the clamp. However, I guess they could just put it under a car's wiperblade, but try it on a bike and it could just be blown away.

There's 2 car parks on either side of the hospital. In one they've had to place bollards for the barriers so removing a car place (car can't squeeze in anymore). So found it's ok to park in these slots. However, in the other park there's no such spaces. So I'm assuming if it's ok to park in a non-car space in one park then it should be ok in the other. There's still the doubt in my mind that I'll have to argue this with some jobsworth though (you know the sort of thing, he's just following the rules, his colleagues shouldn't have told you that, etc. etc.).

Parking at the hospital is a bit of a joke though. I wish I'd had my camera the other week. Near the doors there's signs on the wall and floor say ambulance only and disabled drop off/pick up point. What's in there but 2 police patrol cars (not traffic) and one police dog van. I'm speculating here it was break time and they get a discount in the canteen Confused Wink

Hi

Many years ago Bike magazine had a picture of a courier sat on a clamped CX500 outside a strip club for a caption competition.

Looked like a standard car clamp.

All the best

Keith

PS - Think the winning caption was "That's the last time I pick the wife up from work".

If it was just posed for a picture then it doesn't mean that the clamp actually worked...

Fairly certain it wasn't posed. Didn't look like it was, just a snap of a very hacked off looking courier.

All the best

I think i'd also be sorting out a van or a trailer to get the bike home.
Then cut the b*****d off with an angle grinder.

. . . Dun that with a car clamp before now using a generator and angle grinder. Laughing

I got clamped while I was in the job center!! left it out the back of the building where no car could possibly park so I thought it would be ok.

Came out to find 2 big dirty yellow clampsbolted to me bike, plus a load of tacky stickers with phone numbers stuck everywhere.

Bike was left 10 mins and I payed £85 cash to get them off Twisted Evil

I read some where that they have clamps designed for bikes now. Can't remember where I saw it though.

I once used a beer mat on a stone/gravel pub carpark. The bike was at a scary angle when I got back to it. Shocked

So that the oik that did it couldn't come back and steal the bike later.

Have seen this attempted with push bikes in the past - someone did it to my dad many years ago in Reading; he got out his swissarmy knife and sawed it off, as it was a cheap one Smile.
