Hi
Difficult to know from a description of the noise.
However one possible would be pinking. To count this out fill up with super unleaded next time (or Optimax / BP Ultimate / etc) and then see if it still happens. Higher octane fuel should reduce pinking. If that is the problem then there are a few causes but probably best to decoke it first, either by taking the head off and cleaning up in there or just giving it a few doses of Redex (not as good). Also check the ignition timing.
However that is very much a guess. Could be quite a few things.
All the best

like i said, detonation could be caused by many things, an air leak, lean jetting, carbon deposits, too much compression (is the head skimmed?) incorrect timing......or simply crap petrol
check the simple stuff first, timing, air leaks etc. clean and set the carb up properly. as for compression, check to see if its been skimmed, while you are in there clean any carbon off. pattern base gaskets are often thinner than genuine ones, this can raise the compression and alter the port timing, admittedly not by much, but it might be enough to cause problems if other things arent right.
the other thing it could be is a loose or broken ring, detonation sounds more like a load of small ball bearings in a tin can, a ring gone usually makes more of a regular ticking sound.... |

Gavin
I was speaking to him on mIRC last night. Tend to agree that it is detonation.
Worth noting that he has a big bore kit on it, so not sure how the compression is now, and also that he has reused the head gasket. Possible the gasket is leaking (they have given a very rapid "crack - crack - crack" noise when I have heard a blow head gasket on an air cooled engine), but also quite possible that reusing the gasket will compress it more and raise the compression even further.
Hopefully a tank of Optimax or equivalent will noticeably reduce the problem which will support the idea that it is detonation and then he can go from there in solving it. Hopefully it is just due to a build up of carbon.
All the ebst

Whats up with me bike . sometimes it will idle others it wont. i replaced the gear box oil today, finding quite a bit in there but not enough and also it was almost like water. Some new stuff in but now it just shuts stright off and sounds all chokey. ____________________ Ride Fast, Brake hard, don't fall off! |

Hi
Gearbox oil should not have any effect on idling (or running). Yes, being really picky, more / thicker oil can have an effect but it will be very marginal.
However you say the oil level was low. Worn clutch side main bearing seal? This wears the engine sucks a small amount of gearbox oil in. Tends to make the bike smoke a fair amount as well. Could affect the idle if you added oil and now there is more so it is sucking more in. However this is very much a wild guess.
Really do agree with Gavin that you should pull the head and barrel off and check the top end out.
All the best

If you want a really quick 'solution' set the idle speed high, take the airbox off and dribble some Redex straight into the carburettor body. If it is carbon deposits, that should help the problem. Seeing as the two-stroke head has no valvetrain, removing it to have a look is easy. If you're unsure whether it needs decoking, post a picture and I'm sure people here can tell you.
Just make sure you have the right new gaskets, a socket set and torque wrench to reassemble it with. A Haynes or Clymer manual is also a very good idea. Eliminate the simple problems first before you start looking for more expensive ones.
To that end, stripping and cleaning the carburettor sounds like it could be a good idea. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
