Hi guys,

My Mito ('95 Evolution) won't start. When the starter button is pressed, nothing happens. It's not the battery, because the lights etc turn on fine and the engine won't even try to turn over.

Also, it won't roll start (which I've done very easily in the past). There seems to be no spark in the chamber.

I've changed the spark plug, which didn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas about what it could be? I'm probably going to end up taking it to the place that services it, but I'd like to try absolutely everything simple before it comes to that.

I've got the mito service manual, and that narrows it down to being the coil or the starter. What can I do to test these things? Unfortunately I don't have all the suitable tools that I should. Any other possibilities?

Thanks. Smile

Hi

It takes far less power to operate the lights than to operate the starter motor. Do you here a click when you press the starter button?

Think the Mito is like the RS (and a few other 125s) in that the kill switch circuit does not disable the starter motor. As such there are loads of things that can stop it from generating a spark.

On some bikes I would say it would be the side stand cutout switch, but I don't think the Mito uses one. On most bikes these disable both the starter motor and the ignition system.

Find the starter motor and follow the large wire from that up towards the battery. You should find the starter relay. That is probably the most likely part to fail to stop the starter motor working. But you can check this by checking for a voltage at the starter motor when the ignition is on and you are pressing the starter button.

All the best

Keith

No click.

Thanks, I'll try it tomorrow when it's light. However, if it's a problem with the starter motor, would that prevent me from roll starting it? I don't see the connection between a starter motor problem and having no spark in the cylinder.

Hi

That you are not getting a click from the starter relay suggests that the starter motor is not getting any power at all. Unlikely the starter motor is the problem.

A starter motor fault should not affect the ability to bump start the bike.

I will have a look through the wiring diagram tonight when I get home, but it sounds like some sort of cutout to me. Quite possible that there is a seperate fuse that protects the starter and ignition system and that this has blown.

All the best

Keith

Sounds like the classic sticking solenoid, take the seat off and give it a good poke.
