yeah but surely they will be able to understand leaving your bike for 1 day outside or something...

i asked my insurance company that when i was asking around, they said at that time that if i were to leave my bike out and it got stolen they would not have expected me to keep it in the garage 24hrs a day...

but hey i only got tp insurance anyway so it dont really matter for me!

Insurance companies will nearly always find a way not to pay out (read your small print & you'll see how sh1t your cover really is).

The way to do it, provided you don't mind committing a small bit of insurance fraud, is to either very quickly get a lock installed, or ask your neighbour to borrow their lockable garage for a couple of hours and say it is normally kept in there, but you didn't have it in there at that time.

Bit late now, condolences to your friend.

I think there is more to it than he told you. Insurance co's usually 'ask where will the bike be kept overnight?'

The way he tells it, they would have refused to pay if it got stolen at 12 noon from a multi story car park because it wasn't garaged. Unless i've read it wrong, something doesn't add up.

I'd say that your friend is being slightly economical with the details there.
Alot of policies state that your bike must be garaged at night or if its at the home address it must be in the garage. I've read a story where a guy left his bike out front while he was in the house for a few minutes and it was stolen but the small print said that while at the home address it must be in the garage.

They usally ask you where do u keep your bike AT NIGHT, so if it was stolen during the day it shouldn't matter whether it was outside or not?

They usually ask where it is day AND night, with the opportunity for two different answers (mine did anyway). In fairness to them, you could lock and garage your bike overnight, but work in a scummy, chav council estate and use the bike to travel to work.

Mine simply stated that the excess was increase to 500 quid if it was stolen within 100 yards(or summat) of the garage that it was supposed to be parked in.

My policy only states that my bike must be garaged between 10pm and 6am when its in the vicinity of my home.

So I am covered if its before then and outside Smile.

That's pretty much what my policies have said in the past. Words to the effect of, if the vehicle is stolen within one mile of the garaged address and was not being kept in the garage at the time of the theft. The excess is doubled.

All insurance policies have different terms and conditions. His must presumably stated that when his bike was parked at his home address then it must be garaged at all times otherwise it is not covered for theft.

Some policies specify times such as 10pm to 6am. Others have an incresead excess if the bike is stolen form outside of the garage rather then in it.

I am looking round for my next year of bike insurance at the minute and the conditions vary wildily between insurance companies in relation to the theft aspect. It is up to YOU the policy holder to ensure you understand your obligations and stick to them otherwise you are at the insurance companies mercy if you have need to make a claim and you haven't stuck to the terms.
