hey, quick question, does anyone know what a rider with a CBT aged over 17 can ride up to if they hold a full UK driving licence.

Cheers,

Jack

With a CBT, the rider is restricted to a 125cc that doesn't exceed 14.6 bhp (I think)

That's assuming that the driving licence is a full car licence.

It doesn't matter if your 40 on your CBT, you can still only ride a 125c.

yea as Davo said 14.6BHP but 125cc 2t's when derestriced are almost 30BHP on some bikes so can just get a 2 stroke 125cc if you want a bit more power and just hope you dont get cought, they will never catch you *touches wood*

as said a restricted 125cc. at 17 if you pass your bike test then you can ride any bike restricted to 33bhp.

that is if you meant you had a car license!

No, with a full car licence and a CBT he will have full moped entitlement for the life of the full car licence.

Ah but you have to take a CBT to get the full moped entitlement if the test was passed after Feb 2001.

Also if you passed the car test after feb 2001 you must take a CBT to ride a >125cc bike, if passed before you can ride one without a CBT but still display L plates.

right, clear it up a bit.

The person in question is my father.

He passed his car licence in 1977 (i think) and held a motorcycle licence until 1980 when he recieved a ban and never bthered having catagory a re-instated as he hasnt owned a motorcycle since.

He's 45 and wants to know what his options are, i suggested the DAS as the obvious test to take but he would like to ride something smaller till hes back in the 'bike' frame of mind.

I would get him to still do DAS, just because he's got no restriction on his licence, doesn't mean that he has to buy a big bike.

Is he sure that he hasn't got a full motorcycle catergory on his licence?

I agree with Davo, you sure it's not still there ?
Just because he got a ban doesn't mean that he lost his bike licence.
Get him to check properly and with the DVLA.

not sure, i will ask him when he gets back in. He believes that he simply lost it when he changed adress and never bothered to complain or check it up as he was never going to have a bike again. Either that or the ban. He not sure becuase he wasnt riding a bike so never bothered to check it out.

He should still have his full bike licence.......

BUT..........

The DVLA quite often send licences back WITHOUT categories on them Thumbs Down or even others added on. This is because they are crap and don't bother to check such things.

If this has happend then I am afraid that he will have to start again from scratch. He needs to check his present licence carefully to see about moped entitlement.

Of course he SHOULD be able to send it back to DVLA and they would then put his bike entitlement back on as it was their mistake in the first place. In reality he hasn't got a hope in hell of this happening, they will require all sort of proof that he passed his test, and that info simply doesn't exist anymore in most cases. I think he would need a signed letter from the Popes grandmother saying that she was his examiner to get it back, or something like that.
