Ok, thinking bike chat as wanting info for using on bike. Following on from my workshop thread on powering a player from the bike.
This isn't your usual what is the best one to buy but a specific what can I use on the bike?

Thinking of the following criteria:
Arrow Able to be velcro'd / fastened to bike.
Arrow Able to be used with gloved hands (big buttons Shocked).
Arrow Possibly waterproof/splashproof and maybe ruggedised.
Arrow Like to haves include radio, but not essential.

Before anyone suggests it I did toy with the idea of fitting/adapting one of the car players. However, IMO a bit OTT so if possible I'd rather go with a smaller unit. I know I could just put a player in my pocket but looking for a bit more flexibility.

Asking here as I'd rather go by recommendation as my history of getting a reliable MP3 players is a bit hit and miss. I'm assuming memory based as hard drive ones unlikely to like the abuse/vibes from the bike.

Output from the player will be plugged into an Autocom unit (just hoping that doesn't break Wink)

Any ideas?

I got a 5gb mp3 player off amazon for £150 but there now more expensive. ????
Don't know about glove use. They're all a bit footery if you ask me. Vibration, in your pocket OK on the bike, Bubble wrap or something.
Waterproof ?????

i-pod shuffle. 1Gb

no screen to go wrong, the play/pause button is fairly big, though the volume and track skip ones are smaller. is pretty much sealed, so it could be waterproof, there are also cases available to aid this. only charges through usb though.

H2O will leak in through plug lead jacks. Osmosis.
Splashproof yes. But if tucked into a hole under the seat they will be subjected to condensation.
Just a thought... Neutral

Now why would you put it under your seat?

I put mine in my pocket and have the earphones in my ears and listen to it that way, tunes on and off the bike then. Smile

The post mentioned an 'Autocom' may be employed.
I assume one would simplify wiring by hiding all of the toys somewhere on the bike.
I do know that one can carry one's music storage/playback device on one's person you know.
And for those of you that need every little detail explained,
Water can get into your pocket too.
Unless you have a 'waterproof' pocket.
Duh......

Get the new Nano, they're the biggest available for flash drive MP3 players, the advantage being they won't ever skip. HDD MP3 players skip if you keep them vibrating for over half an hour, but no such problem with a flash player. A good 12 hours out of the battery, as well.

People are complaining about the screens breaking easily though, so I'd hold off buying one for about a month, if you were to get one.

I use an iPod mini.

Although same pitfalls as before. Buttons are fairly big, I tend to use a belt clip, and can switch track if needed. But I tend to leave it on shuffle and let it do its' thing.

Definitely wouldn't call it waterproof, charging is a pain, but for on-bike tunes, I can't beat it.

Maybe worth getting a minidisk player or such, and butchering a remote control so you can fit a change track button to the handle bars. All easily done.

Interesting...for £35 may have to look into it. I like alternative ways of doing things. Speaker size 75x52x25mm. Will have to have a look where to mount. I've thought bike speakers were more in the realm of Goldwings but I think I saw some pics on here with a normal bike (was it Black Nights for the northern meet at Squires?). What is the quality like when on the move?

Problem I've got is no one has thought of an MP3 player that can be mounted and used with gloved hand. Or if they have I guess they think they'd not sell enough to make it viable. It's a set and leave solution if player in pocket or tankbag. I know Honda do their radio that's designed for bike use but that's about £550+ so a little outside the ballpark I was thinking of (like on another continent).

https://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=173

I have had this model, although not with 512mb, for around two years. It comes with a leather case and its small enough to put in my outside jacket pocket. It has a radio also, so you get the best of both worlds.

As I have had it so long I dont even need to take it out of my pocket to press the correct buttons. I know where they are and I can change track whilst on the move.

I am an all weather rider and it has never let me down. It takes a AAA battery. I use rechargable ones which tend to last around a week. Its also got a expansion slot to increase memory. I really can't fault the little blighter!!

I'm working on this same conundrum..

The hein gericke speekers are audable up to 30/40 apparently, which personally isn't much use...

I fitted a stereo runing two 30watt speekers, verry loud in the garrage, totaly useless on the road (30to40mph again, even at full blast)

So i'm planing on fiting the other £1 stereo when i manage to get the wiring harness (has anyone got the wiring harness to a 90sish ford sierra? a picture would be great!) and more pokey speekers...

I'll lt you know how it goes when its all fitted.. might even bit the bullet and buy a new stereo (£30) and some speekers (dunno, cheap of ebay)

But this depends on how much space you have, planing on fiting them into a top box + various faring panels...

As for the player.. i've been useing a minidisc player for the past year and have been extreemly happy with it, the controller stays outside my pocket, needs gloveless hands to do anything with it though...

or you could put it round your neck with the free strap they give you!! much easier to change track when around your neck! i got the 512MB (a MP3 with no screen 120 tracks is more than enough for me!then change them when you plug it into you lap top for charging) can charge it at college/work if you have a PC near, great i think, get better headphones aswell, iPod are the worst IMO
