My bike wasn't starting last Sunday because I had flattened the battery, and since I have been on a training course all week, I have only just got around to chargning it up.

While I was goofing around with the bike, I thought I would give the plugs a check, they were both sooty which brushed off fine, but one of them has a distinct smell of petrol about it, and felt a little damp around the screw thread.

Now in my attempts to get the bike going last week, I flooded the engine (it did eventually start - with a satisfying bang!), and I accidently left the choke on all week. Would that be enough to give me a stinky plug - and will I hit any problems when I try to start it later on today?

ps I have ordered some new plugs off eBay anyway.

If it doesn't start after a few attempts then you are going to get some unburnt fuel on the plug - at least it's a sign that fuel is getting through Wink

If you've had the plugs out to clean them any excess fuel should have evaporated by the time you put them back, so no worries Thumbs Up

Sweet - that's exactly what I wanted to hear, thanks. Thumbs Up

On the plus side of all this (providing it does start when I put the battery back in - T minus 3 hours), I found out that the GS500 has specific spark plus for use when the temperature is less than 5 degrees, and ordered myself a pair of them for the winter.
