Anyone tried something like this?

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-British-Army-Black-Goretex-Socks_W0QQitemZ7188534372QQcategoryZ23824QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'm after something to put over my socks to keep my feet warm. I was out today and really noticed my toes starting to get cold now!!

Have some, work very well, a little too well you could say... they will stop water going in OR out, so you can wade in a huge puddle but your feet sweat will stay in there.

If you wear thin socks underneeth and them over the top theres less of a problem with it..

Very usefull when it gets to minus numbers, just be picky when you use them.

surely with it being gortex it would stop water getting in but let condensation/air out? My army camping bivvy bag i'd use over the sleeping bag was gortex and lets water+air out (you could tie it up almost completely so your nearly fully covered and still breath in it).

They should but they don't Wink

There not bad, i've rarely felt the need to use them as most of the rideing i do is no more than an hours ride at a time (in the dead of winter anyway)

Used them with sidi vertibre boots in -5 and my feet were still warm enough (was more concerned with the rest of me tbh)

Cool, thanks. Think I will try a pair. My boots are OK but I tend to get cold hands and feet quite often so they will probably be a good addition. These are the boots I am wearing:

Gore Tex is a breathable material, but it relies on being able to move the moisture away from the outer surface. If you wear them inside a pair of leather boots which become saturated from the wet the membrane will quickly lose its effectiveness and you might as well put your feet in plastic bags. I've never used the British Army issue socks like that, but I think they are designed to keep water out rather than heat in, although they will have the side effect of being slightly warmer. If you are getting wet feet, buy some fully waterproof boots, or try some Sealskinz. If you just want warm feet, go to an outdoor/ski type shop and get some decent liner socks (silk for preference) and some decent ski socks. Make sure you don't have any tight spots in your boots too, as these will restrict blood flow and give you cold tootsies.

I wanted them for warmth really, not too bothered about the waterproofness as my boots are waterproof and pretty good at that. Thanks for the info.

when we used to go camping and hiking alot theirs these extra fluffy sort of socks made of some material that you can wear over normal socks or much better over thinner socks to keep you toastie. They were great under some waterproof boots and overboots.
