Well maybe not right now but it will be 'that' time of year again in a month or so when the roads get cold and greasy and it's dark on the ride into and out of work. Rather than leave it too late and whinge that there are no cheap bikes I went out of my way to find something early on.

Errrr, well that is not really true. My son said "Bob is selling his bike, do you want it?" Now I have no idea who Bob is or what bike he has so my calculated answer was "Yes, ask him how much he wants". Turns out Bob has an old GPX250r. Nothing stunning but it runs.

I went down this morning, gave him some cash then had a look at the bike. It needs some work but nothing significant for a winter hack.

https://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l41/marki_03/Gas%20Gas/P9023759-Copy.jpg

It starts very easily, stops, goes and generally does what a bike should do. It does feel a bit small and I'm a little dubious of the vee rubber tyres that are fitted.

A couple of jobs are required before I can start using it. The downpipes have a whacking great big hole in the balance pipe. A quick look seems to say that you can't buy replacements cheaply so it looks like the welder is coming out. The tickover is erratic, somewhere between 800 and 3000 rpm. I think a clean is in order first.

Nearly forgot, it cost £100.

Wow serious bargain! Please change the tyres... you could probably get some decent part worns for £50.

I have come to the realisation that I love my TRX too much to ride it through winter so I'm getting the RXS ready for MOT this week if I can. All it needs is some bolts tightening. Also 850cc twin torque and wet roundabouts with random pot holes and drain covers is really not a recipe for fun...

Yeah the tyres probably should be changed but unless I get some really cheap I'll just have to try them and see. They cannot be any worse than some of the tyres I've had in the past.

You fool. Having spent 2 winters commuting on an RXS I can honestly say it was the most miserable experience of my life.

My commute is only about 7 miles. Did your RXS have a micron pipe and carb jetting to suit? Razz

No I was always on the prowl for one though but they are rare as hens teeth in good condition!

My problem with winter on an RXS is the 6v electrics! I used to commute to stafford on L plates up the country lanes which was just plain dangerous with that headlight, plus in - 12 temperatures no heated grips were a real pain, quite literally after 20 miles! By the time I got to uni I had to defrost my hands.

Harry.

Agreed. I ride with them every year but for ultimate win team them with heated grips and you are laughing. Heated grips without muffs is like putting the central heating on and opening the doors and windows.

I never found the lights to be an issue. I sorted the electrics last winter so everything actually works pretty damn well now. However I might well invest in a halogen bulb as suggested by 27cows some time back. My commute is also on pretty major and reasonably well lit roads.

They're on my shopping list. I had heated grips on my ZZR last winter and they just don't do it for me.

I agree, but muffs stop windblast which is the real killer.

I do like putting my hand in a good muff.

Top tip; buy an electric impact wrench. I got my Clarke cew1000 for about £50 and it undoes seemingly completely seized bolts in an instant. Make sure you've got 6 point sockets though. My lidl ones have been ok so far.

If your interest Marki my mate has a GPX 250 sitting in his garden that he's debating flogging or breaking, I can P.M. you his number if you want?

He's been cannibalising the chain and sprockets for his GPZ 500 but other than that the bikes all there and the exhausts look in good nick, it is up in Co. Durham though.

Thanks for the offer. I think it might be a bit too far unless he was willing to post.

I'll sort the one that is fitted for now though.

No idea I know he paid less than £300 for it but doesn't look as tidy as the one Marki has picked up, I'll send you his number if you decide to look into it.

ahhh sorry it was just meant as an introduction. I'll take a couple of photos. The tickover was due to valves and balancing, all sorted for now but it hasn't been for a proper run. I welded the exhaust and it is perfect without any leaks. Got the belly pan fitted which does improve the looks. I still need to change the tyres and it really could do with a new rear shock.

The chain adjustment was interesting, I shall explain later.

BTW Chris, all the bolts have been perfectly behaved so far.
