Sorry about this being a car question, not a bike question - but I guess an engine's an engine, and I know there's some people in here with good engine knowledge. Sometimes when I turn off the engine of my Nova, it stays running for about 4-5 seconds - slowly spluttering till it cuts out. Any ideas what this could be?

Cheers for any help,
Dan.

"dieseling" can be caused when the idle is set too high and/or the ignition is too far advanced. it lets fuel get sucked into the combustion chamber even tho it's off, and if the idle is lean/fast it can run hot enough to combust the fuel without a spark.

it's bad, so get your carb/idle and timing settings checked asap

... and if it's a disel it can be caused by, worn valve stem guides, worn turbo bearings or dodgy gaskets all of which allow oil to run into the hot combustion chamber, and combusting, giving you a VERY smokey, smelly low power, self running engine Smile

:p

Could be Carbon build up on the head, stays glowing hot after you turn the ignition off. That would be hot enough to ignite any fuel still floating around.

When you drive the car do you open it up or just potter around town? It might need a good blowout to clear all the crap out. More fun is to Redex the bugger, air filter off and pour some s l o w l y into the carb while reving the engine, then just watch all the smoke come from the exhaust...Smells nice too. Shocked Shocked

Just pottering around. I use it for shopping and giving the missus driving lessons. The rest of my time belongs to my bike Wink

Might defo give the redex treatment a go. Did it on a car I owned years ago - couldn't believe how much smoke there was! Shocked

Another cause is carbon in the head keeping the engine running.

Nova fitted with a choke? check the cable is properly adjusted and
isn't holding the choke on, sure sign this is a problem if you can start the car without the choke. Or (dare I say it) make sure you're pushing the choke in absolutely as soon as possible.

If you want to hear dieseling in action - pull the choke right out as you turn off the ignition.
