Sorry if this is not a good enough thread to post. Laughing

I was wondering what would be a good touring bike that is easy to fix and maintain but offers wind, rain and some crash protection that is very reliable. Bike would have to be in the 500-1000cc range and has enough luggage (or aftermarket) bits to fit lots of luggage.

Sorry, got to ask ranger, whats wrong with the thundercat/ace?

Always thought they were reliable enough and have one hell of a big fairing. Confused

Could look at an older FJ1200. (whats an extra 200cc)

Yamaha XJ900 diversion with crash bars and a top box with some throw over paniers. Or hard ones if you really don't care what your bike looks like.

Fairly cheap too.

They are not easy to fix and bend and break easily Razz
Was hoping for something without engine casings sticking out that easily turn into dust.

It might not be quite what you are looking for, but I highly recommend the ZZR1200 for that kind of thing. We covered nearly 2000 miles through France over a long weekend on one without any problems what so ever. Thumbs Up

i too wd have thought thundercat wd be good for touring
i wdnt have thought they bend or break if you dont drop them, and why would you want to drop it ?

vfr750 wd make a good tourer too, very comfy and with a bit more useful grunt without being too pricey on insurance as same insurance group as thundercat

for really comfy touring you could get an ex police pan european off ebay. they have bumper bits on the side fairings so even if you drop it you dont do any damage as long as its not too major. might be a bit pricey on insurance though.

some ppl like bmw's for touring too. seating position a bit more like a trail bike than a sports bike

i've done 2 Alps trips in the last 12 months (3000+ miles each trip)
plenty of power 2 up,
fully loaded with tank bag, panniers and top box,
still able to walk and look forwards to the next days ride even after 500 miles in 1 hot day,
good weather protection, reliable and cheap to run. Question

SUZUKI GSX750F Thumbs Up

it does n't get the accolades it deserves

Get a Honda - no need to fix as don't go wrong.

Would suggest VFR750 or the 800 (non VTEC) if you want sporty.

Alternative is the old ST1100 workhorse. Built in engine protection wings and as comfy and reliable as you could want.

If you want to think BMW then this site (click link) maybe has R850s for £3500 that'd do the job.

Any bike that offers fairing protection will be tricky to work on as You've got to take the plastic off first. FWIW I found the VFR is slightly more tricky than the ST1100.

Just some thoughts Thumbs Up

TBH If I thought I couldn't tour for a few days without crashing I'd think twice about going... or at least invest in a quality breakdown package Wink

i would say use the thundercat, and make sure it gets a service before hand.
its amazing what you can actually fit on a sportsbike Smile

I would also say to check the service intervals.

I've a VFR800 (non-vtec) and the service interval is 8000 miles.

The 4000 mile service is just a levels/brakes etc check, they don't even change the oil.

Useful if you are doing some distance and can check the little things yourself.

I wouldn't be surprised if some other bikes were the same.

or how about a blackbird with cosmetic damage £1000 at the moment 1 days to go
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1996-HONDA-CBR-1100-XX-BLACKBIRD_W0QQitemZ4591686278QQcategoryZ9806QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
