Probably best if you just vote, rather than specify in your posts exactly how fast you filter.

This is actual speed, irrespective of other traffic (so if you'd go past a car doing 95 at 96, then choose the '<100') category.
Obviously the speed of the other cars comes into effect, but this poll is just about the maximum that you would filter at.
Would get far to complex to ask maximum speed and maximum speed above other traffic, etc Smile.
Assume other vehicles are going very fast, at what speed would you stop trying to go past them?

Feel free to discuss otherwise.

Have been thinking about this as I've been riding bikes a fair bit more recently and maybe realising why I had previously told myself not to get fast bikes.

I find I enjoy filtering a bit too much.

Not likely to be pulled by the police if you're being sensible in rush hour.

More likely if you're doing 119 undertaking on the M4 when they've got a speed trap set up Embarassed .

Obviously speed limit, weather, hazards etc. come into play.

Motorway filtering, everyone else at 70+? <100.

Elsewhere, generally no more than 15-20mph above the speed limit or speed of traffic.

Except when it's really safe....

I tend to stop filtering if the traffic speed gets above about 40-50mph. All it needs is some dozy bint to change lanes without looking or indicating and you'd have a nasty crash and a worse battle over blame allocation.

I'm talking 'best case' as such, though this will obviously be different for different people.

As said in another post a while back I (like many others) tend to get in to a groove and end up filtering on the motorway when the traffic has cleared. Sometimes I catch myself doing 100 past cars and realise I'm being an idiot.

I said 70mph as that is what I would set my limit as rather than what I catch myself doing.

I have only ever filtered once on my 50, and I came off doing so. Was pissing down with rain, very slight slope. Doing about 25mph with my mate following behind while filtering. Gap seemed to get smaller and smaller, and then I panicked. I showed my inexperience by using the front brake, sending the front end out, and ending up under an Astra. Bike was in a state, jacket and gloves saved me a lot, also smashed helmet on the road, head hit the floor. Didn't hurt at all, just hurt seeing my bike in a state. Luckily the guy didn't claim so I got my NCB. Very Happy

I haven't filtered since and have learned to control the front brake.

Same as Silver said - I tend to stop at about 40, depending on the road.

the fastest ive ever done was in bank holiday traffic on m25, there had been a crash, solid traffic from jc 6 to M40.
30-mph-50mph most of the way but i did get a spirt where i got up to 70.
i saw a crazy bloke doing that speed all the way, bugger that, all you need is some bint to change lanes

I have found myself lately riding between cars doing 70ish mph at about 80-90... I know its wrong but I do try to judge it carefully.

Otherwise with stationary traffic, I tend to ride fairly slowly (max 40mph) Because it is more difficult to anticipate what a car driver might do.

Usually I will filter if the traffic is moving slower than 50, unless I'm following someone else who is filtering faster, and I tend to follow. This isn't to say that I ride past my ability in this situation, rather I tend to keep 20% back when riding lone.

Generally the same as Silver, although i did filter past R6Jonny (in the same lane) on the busa at a 140ish, but have never done that since.

Filter at usually 30mph in rush hour traffic through town, motorway filtering through stationary traffic is up to 50mph and high speed weaving between lanes up to 120mph.

really depends on weather/traffic/light conditions.

Depends entirely on my mood. Some days I'm up for it, others I'm not.

I voted sub 70 cos usually once things are doing the speed limit, I'll go with the flow rather than through it, my theory having always been that the key to speeding is not to attract undue attention to yourself.

Not against the law, but as has been said above within sensible limits no problem.
When it gets to: Driving without due care, Careless driving, Dangerous driving, then police will stop you.
Hitting/being hit by someone whilst in 'filtermode' won't do you any favours in an insurance claim though. Same as ignoring arrows painted on road to guide traffic. No offence, unless you cause other traffic to take avoiding action or you are involved in an accident. If you were in a lane not suitable you'd probably be done.
Apparently, a speed not 10/15mph faster than slower traffic and within speed limits is acceptable. I filter past traffic police cars regularly and haven't been pulled (Sorry officer). It's same as pushing into a queue. It can piss people off.
Use the force/noggin

What would you consider filtering btw?

Obviously "Lane Splitting" whereby you go down the central gap of a dual carridgeway during time of heavy/stationary traffic.

Would you consider passing heavy/slow moving traffic on a single caridgeway filtering? I'll regularly travel down a local single caridgeway bypass at 70, passing other cars & overtaking lorries...

Been on a 50cc and all, I can't go above 50mph. So I only choose to filter when the traffic is stationary, I normally travel at around 10mph or so, but if the traffic is moving slowly say around 20-25 mph , then I probably will try and filter past at anything between 30mph upwards.

95% of my journey to and from work involves the notoriously busy North Circular road, which, 9/10, is solid with traffic. As a result of which, I find myself filtering at between 20-30mph, usually in a convoy also.

However, I've been doing this journey over a year now, and even since day 1 up until now, I still think it's a case of "when" and not "if" a car simply doesn't see me and decides they wanna be in the lane next to them. Crying or Very sad

Regularly take the long way home from work for this reason. 40mph SPECS enforced dual carriageway. The perfect road for moderately fast filtering. As it's a low limit loads of people drive in the outside lane without reason, so shit loads of undertaking to be done as well.

I don't have the balls to roar through traffic at a constant fast speed though... Prefer to back of the throttle inbetween each manouver, even if I only gain about a second of thinking time, and then accelerate back up to the speed I wish to do the next pass at. As my bike doesn't have enough grunt to do this above 50mph or so, generally don't filter properly on fast roads.

I love filtering, once clipped a cone doing 50 on a blocked up dual carrigeway though and it ripped my exhaust down the middle. Crying or Very sad

Still, fast filtering is fun. Mr. Green

Probably the third or fourth time I filtered I was happily moving at roughly 15 past stationary traffic. All good. Then I saw the rozzers and hammered my front brake on Shocked Released the brake before I binned it (started to slide out :p) and then remembered that it was perfectly legit! Very Happy Cops neither saw nor cared, and I cruised down the line.
these days though, I'd probably say I take the piss Very Happy

Got stuck behind a pair of Harleys filtering along the M8 today, they were doing maybe 15mph through stationary traffic, very uneasily. I figured for my own safety I would weave through between lanes 1+2 and skip ahead of them. I then realised I was filtering at around 40-50 depending on the space. Nothing beats it.

At one point, I was filtering at such a pace that I decided it best to tuck my mirrors in so as to avoid shattering them. Then I remembered my hands/handlebars stick out equally as far. And then I slowed down some.
