In what context?

In a Pantrher 650 it is a means of starting the bike without breaking your leg.

In a CB125 it is mechanical device that forms an integral part of the points system that means the timing is appropriate for the rev speed.

Bolted to the flywheel of a fireblade it is a device for gaining a few bhp at increased risk of detonation in your engine.

the bike its put on a dyno machine + rolling road and run and various positions through the rev range. the machine tells what BHP/torque the bike is producing at a certain RPM. Also the exhaust gases can be analysed to see it the bike is running too lean (too little fuel in the fuel air mix) or too rich (too much fuel in the fuel air mix) at different RPM.

when the piston hits top dead centre the spark fires,
if you retard it, it fires after, on its way down, if you advance it it fires before.
or is it the other way around?
it alters the fuel efficiency and power delivery...
i know this is a car page but its about what you need to know

I think I understand it now, it creates a higher pressure as it ignites it earlier (forcing the gas upwards reducing the area.)

Is momentum the only reason why it doesn't start going in reverse?

Yeah, if it wasn't for the angular momentuam of the crank, the engine would go in reverse. I guess since momentum is proportional to speed, the ammount by which it is advanced is reduced at lower revs.

Exactly. Buy that man a drink.

If you advance the ignition too far on a 2-stroke, it does start running in reverse. First thing you know of it is when you let the clutch out and the bike shoots off between your legs Laughing
