It's not really about getting any card or piece of plastic, it is however about power (buyer power to be precise).

the theory for those that don't already know is that by collating a huge list of motorists who would be willing to participate, the organisers can effectively hold to ransom one specific petrol company of there choosing (mid sized being best) and either pledge allegience to that company for cardholders or more likely threaten to pledge allegience to another major company. In theory at least the approached company will drop their price accordingly thus triggering a price war.

it also acts as a demonstation to the government of how large a proportion of motorists no longer accept the massive tax levied on fuel.

It's kind of a three way "guns at high noon" affair.

it certainly deserves our support..........

Hello,

My name is Ben Scammell, and I am behind Pipeline Card.

It's not a scam, even though people do seem to be noticing the surname rather frequently! Wink

This can work if people give it some support....if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Thanks to all those that have registered so far.

Cheers,

Ben

It sounds like a good scheme and I like the idea behind it. However the lack of a 'privacy policy' (i.e. what happens to the data sumitted) does put me off a little, pehaps it may for others too. Just a suggestion.

just joined aswell, sounds a good idea as a lot of place around have tried keeping prices up after the strike (esp. RON98)

although easiest way to get money off is the government as they take most of it

I couldn't see anything about it in there, that's why I asked. The T&Cs linked from your registration page just say:
Quote:
By registering on the Pipeline website, you agree to receive any messages that are send to you in relation to fuel discounts and other Pipeline activities.

Which is a bit different from what I was thinking. Something explaining what your email address won't be used for might be useful and seems to be the norm for a lot of companies, perhaps saying about your address not being passed on to third parties etc. (unless of course that's what you intend to do with them. Smile )

I see your point, and no passing them on is not the intention. I will give this my attention tomorrow morning.

That's a pretty good idea, so I've signed up. The catch of course is that the government won't stop raping the vehicle driving public because the public are too scared to do anything about it. The government are the ones needing to be targetted most, rather than the oil companies, who control relatively little of the price of fuel on the forecourts.

Public protest activity seems to have died along with Union action in the seventies. Neutral

Good point, But I think I can answer this one (Ben can feel free to correct me on this).

as we all know the government do NOT listen to the majority, instead ploughing on with what a small number of people believe is right.
By directly attacking the UK petrol suppliers (who make a small profit compared to government tax) then the initial expected outcome is a price war and the relevent price drops this brings.

What should in theory then happen is that the large petrol companies will have no choice but to join forces with each other and also the motorist by applying pressure on the government to lower tax.
from the governments point of view, faced with the threat of major petrol companies going bust and the ensuing economic disaster it would be preferable to cut tax

I am no real expert on this, perhaps Ben would like to explain the theory behind his campaign in more detail.

Are you worried that this might see some smaller independant stations get put out of business, I believe lowered prices in the short term can seem them having to sell petrol at a loss to keep their heads above water.

Also, has any consideration been made to the possibility of putting small and medium national companies out of business, eventually leading to less competition and higher prices?

Good point G
As said though I am no real expert on this, its just the theory as I understand it.

I would feel sorry for any small forecourt business's forced to close, but lets be honest how many are left any way, and the hope is that the government would step in before things went to far. (unlikely)

what the government deny is that fuel prices play a major part in the countrys economy. for example how many people here could continue commuting to work if fuel reached something stupid like £2.00 per litre.
How many business's are already being crippled by fuel costs.
haulage, and farming are just 2 major areas affected by fuel costs.
As I see it fuel cost can only get so high before the whole economy implodes because of it.

For me at least fuel has not got to get much more expensive before it will become economically unviable to retain my employment.

Cheers

i have paid up to 99.9P/L at my local petrol garage before the "price" drop... i didn't see a drop in the price for a good fortnight after the tax cut... every week since then it goes down by about a penny.

i now pay 86.9P/L and i get my g/f's 5P of every litre receipts every 4 days, so i pay 81.P/L... there are ways of lowering the cost, it might not be alot. but it's something.

just signed up
