Curious thing yesterday

Right as you may know, im on the smod while im at uni.

Yippee, when it starts its usually vaguely happy, when and if it starts that is.

Anyway yesterday, with the aid of some bad language i got it started. Slowly riding to give the ancient leviathon a chance to warm up.

Go to overtake a learner a little later. Drop one, clutchless to go up to the next gear... and nothing. Thought id stripped the clutch. Clutched in and booted it again and it worked, albeit dodgily.

Ok, abit cold me thinks, or i cocked up the change.

I carry on, another learner. So i do the same, drop a cog, rev the tits and go to clutchless. Nothing. This time no amount of clutching and shuffling gets it in any gear. So i roll to a stop (deja vue of the cbr clutch stripping).

But when i got it into neutral, and then into first it was fine. There was plenty enough to power wheelie happily, and later on clutchless went fine?

WTF?

The chain was abit flappy and unlubed at that point, but i cant see that making the entire gearbox die.

Or does it?

Hi

I would suggest a sticking clutch cable, but you are doing clutchless changes so that probably counts that out.

It is possible to get a neutral between gears (in theory there is one between every gear, otherwise you could engage 2 gears at once and lock the gearbox solid, but it should be impossible to find them). Few worn gearbox components can make this happen.

I would try doing an oil change and check what comes out with the oil.

Also its got a hydraulic clutch, which i bled recently (albeit badly) and so i doubt it would be a sticking cable.

Oil could be a possibility, but im in the habit of clutchless gearchanges when overtaking (alot easier, although ive noticed if it doesnt move and you do it hard enough you can wobble the bike but small price) as its alot crisper accelerating.

I was thinking it was perhaps the chain? When i say it was a bit flappy, i mean dame thora hirds boobs flappy. Slight rattling from it on the ride home as well (uber stretching from combination of leaving it outside in the rain unlubed and then doing lots of wheelies and burnouts im sure ). It was so bad i actually motivated myself to buy some chain lube and tension the bugger.

Was bizarre aswell as it felt literally like the clutch wasnt re-engaging. But then using the clutch i dropped it back into neutral, back into first and slowly pulled away (hill start) and then powerwheelied (to check).

No problems. And later on as i say im sure i did a fair few clutchless changes. I also reved it to the limiter and it didnt feel as if it was slipping...

So is there anyway the clutch can jam up momentarily? But then work itself loose just by gear and clutch waggling?

Thats whats confusing me, inconsistent problems....

Doubt it is the clutch as you haven't touched it prior to cause the problem.

See if any nasties come out with the oil.

i would say a oil change check n see what comes out, my TDR does that some times when i do the clutchless shifting it pisses me off cos its usually when im about to humiliate some bellend on his shiney R1 on the twisties round here ah well


Deffo check the oil.... n another thing i used to do to check me gearbox was not have the engine running and gently rock bike back n forth while shifting through gears see if u find any false neutrals that way.... might just be worn internal parts

lol ive had that happen and hear from my m8s it happening all the time its the neutrals between gears my zxr has them everywhere when it wants lmao and the gs i belive has one lurking in there as ive hit it a few times nothing to worry about i belive its due to the teeth being knocked about a bit and when u go to shiff u just miss the shift and it leaves it in limbo so i wouldnt worry if i was you
