Just wondering as a lot of people here seem to. I personally only do them on motorways or dual carraigeways when changing lane.

Not as much as I should...I tend to rely on my mirrors too much - comes from many years of driving I think Embarassed

Yes, although I seem to have kind of merged a mirror check and lifesaver into one now. My mirrors show my elbows off nicely but not a great deal else if I'm tucked in a bit, so I tend to move my head out a bit to check my mirror then keep going and do the lifesaver at he same time. Not sure if this is a good thing though. Smile

Yup, probably more than I need to.

I was taught to just do that brief check whenever I am changing direction, so that's what I do.

It's saved me at least once, when I went to move to the inside lane on the M53 just after passing a junction only to find that the car that had just come on at the junction couldn't be bothered going round me or waiting for me to make my move (I was indicating) and was in the process of undertaking me.

I try to do them all the time.

But, I'f I'm on a slip road onto a dual carriageway or motorway, I usually stand on the foot pegs too and have a good look behind me, since I have a limited view in my mirrors and restricted head movement.

I'm not an owl, after all Razz

I often do them even when I'm 100% sure I don't need to. Though am sometimes not as good when I'm concentrating on what's ahead more, but then usually going fast enough that I've seen what's next to me as it was infront of me a short time ago Smile.

If I'm at a red light and I'm pulling away hard I don't use them, but other than I do. Especially on motorways. Sometimes when you start riding hard on small roads and go to motorways you forget that the average speed people are goiong at is higher.

And then we try one at 70-80mph on a windy day Shocked

Blows your f****g head off, don't it ?

When you look back, you don't know whether to move out because there's nothing in your way, or whether to risk lifting your left hand to put the lid back into place Laughing

Confused err, not really. Now mostly faired bikes at high speed, but sure I've done life savers and shoulder checks at twice those speeds.
When one side of my visor came off at 50mph or so and acted like a big sail attached to the left of my helmet it was 'interesting' though.

If it's moving that much, might be worth looking at a better helmet.
The helmet I used on my klr for a bit would compress against the front of my head leaving a gap at the back at high speed. Not good.

When coming off a roundabout, changing lanes, overtaking, moving around things.

If in doubt I throw them in. I never bothered with them until I almost went into the side of a speeding merc when changing lanes Thumbs Up

Mine's a nice, tight but comfy fit. Anything tighter would either push my cheeks in too far or give me a headache through being too tight around my scull.

I wasn't talking about large movements of the lid - just a few millimetres. But just enough to make it feel uncomfortable and slightly 'out-of-position'. I've tested dozens of helmets, and I've yet to find one which feels more natural on my particular head shape Thumbs Up

Anyway, you're a far more experienced biker than me. I'd never dream of doing the sort of speeds you're talking about - on or off the road Embarassed

Have forgot them a few times. Then immediately on turning cursed myself for not doing one.

I also look over my shoulder in the car when changing lanes or road position. Never trust what you see in your mirrors.

Dont do them all the time, mainly just use them when changing lane, pulling away from lights and junctions.

Usually moving too quickly for ppl to come up on me unnoticed.
