HI all

I have a hondaNSR125, that don't seem to want to start in the cold
or when left for 2 days or so without a run
I have a new battery and spark plug

I went to a friends house and left the bike out side in the cold for about 1hr
when I went back to it, it would not start

any ideas ?

Check that your regulator/rectifier is charging the battery, even a new battery will drain without being charged when you ride. Ideally you need a multimeter, you're looking for about 14.5 V across the battery when the engine is revved.

A cheap check is to see if the lights get brighter when you rev the engine. This doesn't necessarily mean that the reg/rec is healthy though, it may be putting too much voltage across the battery which will also fry the battery.

Cheers

Grim

i agree with you , but it will be more efficient to upjet the carb , especially the slow jet . i had this problem in the past which i solved partly by putting the choke on after having stop engine . but changing my 38 slow jet by a 42 made the trick . the late models are really underjet (132,38,55) , the best is to fit 138,42,65 for £10 ish

this is a race plug . they are expensives (£6.84 ex VAT) but very efficient and will save 1/2 to 3/4 L on a full tank
https://www.sparkplugs.co.uk
generaly i fit a BR9EIX this time of the year and the BR10EIX in hot days or if i run mainly on motorways

Thanks again for the great info,, not had time to do it all yet,
but did have time to pop to town and buy a optimate charger
when I first plugged it in to charge, it said the bat was very discharged
so left it charging till full
then went on a 30min ride with lights on
got back home and left the bike stud for about 2hrs and the plugged the charger back in and the bat was badly discharged again?
so could my start up problem be electrical?
also when I put the brake lights on the front light dim by about 20%
even when travailing at 60mph
Sad

How long have you had the battery? All of the recent cold weather may have helped kill it so it has a smaller capacity than usual.

it seems that your battery is worn , buy a new one (less than £20)
download this file from my ftp
https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRtips.doc
you will find studies on the batteries

Make sure that you are using the right battery. The NSR uses a YTX5L-BS.

If you are using the incorrect one, then it may not me able to gain charge from the system.
