Saw my first badger this week, didn't really get chance to appriciate it as it was on a suicide mission.
Luckily I was in the car and the damage was minimal, to me anyway.

It certainly hit home afterwards. If I had hit it on the bike there was no way i'd have stayed upright.

Dark winter nights, winding country lanes, wildlife suddenly decides to cross the damp muddy road.....Wham.

On most bikes the headlights simply aren't up to the job. The distance you can see by night is greatly reduced. It seems to be getting dark now from around 4pm which is well before many finish work. If you commute home encopmasses some countryside terrain, keep your eyes open and speed low, you never know whats going to jump out in front of you!

I once came across a badger one night on a country lane. I saw him fairly early and moved over, he stopped and started going back, I switched to go the other side and he changed his mind again, just missed each other.

Another chum followed one down a lane with high banks and as the badger was in front of him, not able to get out, he can say that a badger can run at 27mph!

Don't hit one on the bike , you wouldnt believe how solid they are , if you do , be very careful around them if you go back to have a look as they are really fecking nasty , i had one years ago and had to run away from it as the damn thing tried to take me leg off , they are NOT half as cute and fluffy as they look , they are in fact evil growling monsters with big teeth!!

The Management Evil or Very Mad mends broken bagers at the local wildlife centre. Evil bastards - sometimes takes two or three people to hold the varmit down whilst she checks it out. You'd think they would be a little bit more kindly to someone trying to help 'em. Rolling Eyes

The teeth are not such a worry - it's the claws to keep clear of.

I hit a badger on my bike a few months ago and stayed on. I had no time to react and reckon I only stayed upright because I was going in a straight line and at about 70mph.

Heart in mouth stuff though! Mr. Green

I'm one of those people for which wildlife just dives in front of my car. So far my tally (that i can remember - there may be more) is:

Kills:

1 Rabbit - classic bump... pause.... bump.
1 Stoat (winter colours black tip on tail)
1 Starling - hit wiper at 60 and broke its neck.......and my wiper.
1 Barn Owl at 80mph - masive explosion of feathers and needed a new bonnet as it made a fair sized dent!
1 shrew - flattened is not the word
3 sparrows in one go
7 sparrows in one go!!!! - talk about being hit with AA fire! and yes i got out an counted.

Near misses:

1 Cat ... This was very very close - we stopped to check for certain i'd not hit it, a rabbit etc is one thing but a cat is someones pet.
Lots of Rabbits Rolling Eyes
1 Sheep
1 Rat yesterday
1 Shrew yesterday

Partial hits??:

1 crow... on motorway - it pulled up slightly at the last minute but not before its foot had made contact with the roof of my car. Took it clean off and left it stuck in the rubber seal surrounding the windscreen!! I heard/felt the 'clip' but saw the bird recover in the mirror so thought nothing of it until i got home Sick
