PostPosted: 23:23 - 18 Nov 2005    Post subject: [WANTED] Athlon64 3200+ skt 754 CPU [WANTED] Reply with quote

Well following on from this thread on a tech forum...

https://www.tech-forums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78137

... I have decided to buy another CPU, but im on a TIGHT budget and can afford a new one, but dont really want to part with the best part of £90+...

So does anyone have a second hand one going? Would prefer 3200+ but may consider others... Need it to be socket 754 compatible...

cheers

Just had a read through that. Thinking

Your Windows skin is not normal, i take it your are using a skin app such as windows blinds. I would uninstall that and try windows completley standard.

See how that goes. Thumbs Up

Done it already Wink Not a single difference. Windows blinds is not as resource hogging as some people think.

I was suprised to hear its my processor thats dying, as the computer was new in January...

I dont think your processor is dying, maybe it is over heating but i doubt very much its dying.
I take it you have tried a clean instal? and that your network is being used in the correct manner if you are connected to one?

Seems fairly unlikely that it's your processor. They tend to either work or not. Not aware of any fault that would just make it need more processing power to do the same tasks.

I'd be looking more towards a software problem. Seems a bit drastic to be buying a new chip when you don't want to do an install because you've only had it 10 months!

Slowdown like you describe is usually a RAM problem, or software/drivers sapping processing power.

I'd be tempted to run a full reinstall before I considering splashing out my cash.

Try going through your registry and eliminating programs that run in the background on windows start up.

Go to Start menu - run - type 'msconfig' (without the quote marks) and have look at the Startup tag. Anything that you don't think you need, uncheck it, exit, restart windows, and see if it achieves anything.

I will stake my life on it NOT being the CPU. Mr Anphrax doesn't know what he's talking about. Nor does anyone else who's told you it's the CPU.

Head over to www.over-clock.com/ivb and make a post in the Tech Support section of the forums there... post it once, and then wait a while - a moderator will come along and set it visible asap (during business hours). I'll get to it Monday morning and see what help I can advise.

The CPU Useage issue is 100% a software / driver / malware issue.
Memtest failing is due to cheap ram or Cas Timings out of spec for the ram you're running (or you're ram is running asynchronously to CPU Bus)

When a CPU becomes faulty, it either overheats for no reason (ie: runs permanently on the hot side) or it crashes left right and centre. It certainly doesn't start inflicting a load upon itself. For the CPU to have a load, there HAS to be software giving it the load to work on. It can't just invent it.

A wipe and reinstall of windows followed by avoiding Limewire and other less-reputed P2P apps would certainly resolve most of the issues. Limewire is one of the worst culprits out there for invisibly allowing Trojans to be dumped on your system.

In the meantime, just head for https:// housecall.trendmicro.com and run it thru the online virii / spyware checker. Even if you have local AV installed, if it isn't kept completely up-to-date on a daily basis, you run risk of infection without awareness.

If you must source a new CPU, sticking to s754 is foolish - it's a dead standard now superceded by socket 939.

Did you notice any problems before you put all your software back on and started using the net again? In a previous post you mention Limewire - this seems to cause a lot of people problems, Sparks has just started a thread complaining that it crashes his PC.

Hmmmmmmm, weird. I have just taken out my two sticks of ram, blown all the dust away, and only put one stick back in (512mb) and everything is running smooth and normal again! Went into CSS, and heypresto my god FPS is back, no more 15 fps. I was back up to 10 fps Thinking

Im gonna put the other 512 stick back in now and see if its still allright..

Weird Shocked

Edit, my cpu has stopped spikeing randomly too!

well, if your ram was duff (whether because it was knackered or had dust blocking it) I guess it could cause spikes purely because the CPU would have to try and work out what was happening, keep resending data to the memory until it worked, or use virtual RAM on the hard drive, which is much slower.

Sounds like a happy ending.
