Well, the diagram should show it better but do you always have to filter on the right of the traffic, if you're coming up to a light you want to go left on, because if the lights change when you're filtering, you might have to go right then?
Could you have a look at the diagram and say what I should do?
Thanks,

i would filter put to the second car and then wait behind the first car and get my bike into that little space between cars, this way you have skiped most of the traffic but with the "flow" of the traffic (hope you understand what i mean) i normall do this at lights im turning left of or where theres a major right that lots of poeple use.
Hope this helps  ____________________ 99 RS125 --> 02 SV650s --> 03 Speed Four --> 92 RXS100 --> 93 CB400sf --> 01 CB600f Hornet

You picture describes 3 roads that join, without a roundabout, and without any specified right of way.
This just doesn't exist.
Please draw the correct picture. ____________________ <Simple> no I'm shaven Jon

Each of the roads have traffic lights, it does exist, it is in the town near me.
Hmm, I like andy13_Uk's plan, but what if there is not a space between the cars, do I just try to get inbetween as theyre moving off?
Thanks,

Following Andy's reasoning, if there isn't a big enough gap for you to fit in just sit on the right and tilt your front wheel towards the existing gap and just go forward a bit. This way even though you aren't inside the gap you still are in front of the car(at least your frontwheel is...).
It works for me, maybe someone else can come up with a strategy that will suit you better.
Best of luck.

Personally, I would just undertake them, as it's never been pointed out to me as 'wrong', it's just 'making progress'. ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

When you are filtering, you are overtaking. Undertaking is generally illegal, though when you are overtaking the stationary traffic on your left, you are undertaking that on your right.
In general, to the right of the left hand lane, or second lane on the motorway. If, when you come to a halt, you want to move to the left of your lane to get into a left hand filter, I can't see why that would be wrong.
Apply the above reasoning with a good dose of common sense and creativity, depending on how late you are.
One of my main rules is to never filter past anything stationary which has a space in the adjacent lane. Take that space, and give yourself plenty of room to get out of the way if they decide to change lanes. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Undertaking is only illegal if dangerous. Applies to motorway too. If someone's hogging the third lane, then you can legally undertake them. ____________________ TheShaggyDA: I've got 3 or 4 pairs that predate my wife, so at least 11.5 years old. |

There is nothing in law that specifically prohibits you from overtaking on the left. It is just that the police tend to interpret it as driving without due care and attention or dangerous driving in a blanket fashion. You then have to prove it wasn't in court which is your word against a traffic officer. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. A car travelling at 70 is not waiting to turn right however. It is obeying the speed limit and is breaking no traffic law. If you're even going to go past it, you're breaking the law.
All it is even perhaps doing is breaking the Highway Code, and if there is steady traffic in both of the other lanes, it is not even doing that. Passing on the left is not big, nor clever, as no-one is expecting you to do it. If you're going to, expect people to try and block you, honk their horns, expect them to not see you, not to give you any space and to be generally unfriendly. Make lots of noise and be in that position for as little time as possible.
Most of the time, just don't. Be grateful enough if they make/ leave space to pass on the right, don't push your luck on the left.

Hi,
So Andy's plan is the best idea, but is it legal to go the other way? I know undertaking on motorways is illegal but I wonder if this is undertaking, as the other cars are stationary, and you are taking the left anyway, you're not going to get in their way etc...
Thanks,

Personally I can find it a bit dodgy going RIGHT to the front so I always tuck myself in behind the first or second car. If you sit behind the first car pointed in the general direction of its bumper with your left indicator flashing and the car behind ready to hit you, it will let you in. Works every time. ____________________ Northern Irish? www.nibikers.com |

Got to be to the left. If you go to the right you have a chance of being knocked of if the cars go to the right. Also i beleive you are legally allowed to go along the left side of a vehicle going right.

Just the other day whilst out in the van I heard the roar of a bike and sure enough there was one comin by me close, on the right. I was held up in traffic at traffic lights. Being a rider myself I did move over to the left to give him more room and allowed him to move in front of me, he proceeded to cross over and carry on filtering past the traffic down on the left hand side. I take it this monouvre is allowed?? But I do feel its of a dangerous one, its something that I have yet to do, doubt I will for a long time, the OH will do it and I Just cringe if riding pillion, cagers hate you for it dont they |
